These are two (relatively) new neighborhoods in western Arvada, on the south side of the tracks near Barbara's Gulch. The trail (named "Single Track Trail") has a couple of nice views of the tracks. With locomotive emissions as efficient as they are these days, it is difficult to tell that all seven of the units on the train are throttling up! With temperatures around 55°F, this Provo-Denver manifest leaves Rocky on a clear signal. C44-9Ws used to rule BNSF manifest on the Moffat. However, they are already starting to become outdated as more and more "Evolution Series" units are showing up! Nice to catch a Dash-9 on the point on this morning. In the late 1990s, after the UP/SP merger, UP assigned unique IDs to every control point on the former Rio Grande (and all of Espee). While most of the Grande trackage got an "RG" prefix (for Rio Grande), the tracks between Denver and Range got the "DS" prefix (for Denver & Salt Lake). The reason being because Tennessee Pass got the "RG" prefix, and milepost number on Tennessee Pass and the Moffat are duplicated. So the prefix was changed to avoid confusion. An eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver (which is currently moving compass north) meets a westbound UP PBurg Local (which is currently moving compass south). The trains weave back and forth at the base of the canyon, while also making significant changes in elevation. Here, the crew of this eastbound can quite easily look out the window and check out their rear DPU as it descends from Tunnel One. The train me an (on time) Zephyr at Crescent, and will also meet a westbound UP manifest at Rocky. The UP manifest is already there, holding the siding. It is setup as 3x3x1...three units on the point, three in the middle, and one on the rear. It is setup this way as it is actually quite heavy, particularly for a westbound. The train is 10,754 tons and just under 4,200 feet in length. The train has 76 loads (and 3 empties), many of the loads being sand in covered hoppers. That is accounting for a lot of the weight. The MNYRO is typically called around 2pm or 3pm and, during winter, typically does not depart Denver until after dark. So what is this guy? This is the "Phippsburg Local". The train will briefly stop at the west switch to wait for maintenance to clear. And by briefly, we are talking less than 30 seconds! I had hoped to move to the Simms Street grade crossing for another shot, but the 30 second stop didn't give me enough time to get there.
