A Phase 7 P42DC leads the westbound Zephyr across the Carr Street grade crossing and through the high/wide detector at MP 8.4. The detector has a wire suspended around the track. The closest the wire gets to the track matches the closest a tunnel wall (or ceiling) gets to the track. If anything is sticking out too far (or high), it'll break a wire, indicating the car will not clear a tunnel.

I felt like this shot almost feels like the Winter Park Express actually originated from the sun! The Ski Train is right on time here as it charges west out of Leyden. In fact, the train will make up a little time and arrive at the base of the slopes in Winter Park 12 minutes early.

The sun is just a few degrees above the eastern horizon as the Winter Park Express heads the opposite direction, away from the rising sun and toward the Rocky Mountains and the Winter Park Ski Resort.

Shortly past sunrise, the sun glints off the Superliners of the westbound Winter Park Express, just west of Leyden. Clear skies and the early morning create a perfect gold hour.

AMTK 146 leads the Winter Park Express across the grade crossing at Tolland. The train was slightly delayed in departing Winter Park as it had to wait for the Moffat Tunnel to vent after a 25 minute late Zephyr went into the tunnel first.

The evening Winter Park Express is running just a couple of minute late as it approaches the grade crossing at Tolland. The sun has set at this point and the light is fading, but the scene is a nice and tranquil one.

The eastbound Zephyr crosses over a frozen-over South Boulder Creek about a mile east of the east end of Tolland. Considering we are in the middle January, the temperature is actually fairly warm at 30°F, here at 8,700 feet above sea level.

In the middle of winter, the Zephyr arrives in Denver well after sunset, even when it is running right on time. However, you can catch it in a little bit of direct sunlight close to the Moffat Tunnel. Here, the train is passing by the handful of houses found in Tolland. Most are summer houses, currently boarded up and empty. However, one single house, which the Zephyr is about to pass, is home to a Gilpin County Sheriff.

The morning Zephyr is viewed from the north side of the rails at Rocky as it approach the turnout to the Rocky Flat Industrial Lead, seen climbing the 8% grade up the hill to the left. There are a lot of clouds on this mostly overcast morning, allowing for some shots from the usually shady side of the tracks.

The Winter Park Express has expanded service, currently running with seven coaches and a sightseer/lounge car. The train is just over 9,000 feet (2,743 meters) above sea level here at East Portal, in the middle of a frozen winter wonderland. The Continental Divide is snow-covered, the peaks in the background are around 13,000 feet (almost 4,000 meters) above sea level. The train just emerged from the Moffat Tunnel, and is running right on time for its journey back to Denver.

In the midst of the blue hour, the Winter Park Express Ski Train has emerged from the Moffat Tunnel and is headed east on a clear (green) signal. As you can see, we are definitely stuck in the dead of winter hear at 9,000 feet above sea level.
