There's about 15 minutes left before the sun will duck behind the mountains. After waiting a few hours for the Valmont empty to clear, the Denver to Laurel finally has a warrant to proceed north toward Longmont. Cars are pacing the train on the Diagonal here has three engines work to take the train north in the setting sun.

Main Street USA! Also know as Atwood Street in Longmont. The Front Range Sub runs right up the middle of Atwood Street and a Valmont coal empty is currently occupying the tracks.

Northbounds are always hard to shoot on the Front Range Sub, but that problems tends to get worse in the winter months when the sun is further to the south. The sun is almost directly behind this Valmont empty as it makes its way north past 63rd Street along the Diagonal.

For decades, coal for the Valmont power plant has come from western Colorado. However, starting in November 2008, the coal is now coming from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming. BNSF now gets all the business (whereas UP ran the train to and from the mine). BNSF will route the loaded train down the Brush Sub and the empty north on the Front Range Sub. Here is the first train headed north on on the Sub, approaching the Foothills Blvd Underpass.

The north side of Burke Hill has a 2% grade coming down into Boulder. The DENLAU has an H2 C44-9W, Warbonnet C44-9W and an H2 SD75M for power. The train is stopped at MP 24 to wait for the Valmont empty to clear ahead.

Holding just shy of MP 24, the HDENLAU (Denver to Laurel) has a long wait ahead of it! The Valmont coal empty is working on putting its train together and this train won't be moving until the coal train is clear...about two hours later.

Just south of Butte Mill Road, power for the Valmont coal empty pause to give the conductor time to walk to the back of the train to protect a reverse move back to the main line.

Empty hopper cars for the Valmont power plant are spotted on a storage track along the Stazio Fields in Boulder. Here, north of the fields, power for the Valmont train is about to back up and attach to the empty hoppers. Just ahead of the lead unit (in the distance) is the end of the line! Once upon a time, the track continue to UP's Dent Branch, but long gone are those days...

I have always been a fan of Kansas City Southern. Probably because the railroad was very similar in size to the Rio Grande and yet it has survived and even grown into the 21st Century

A pair of BNSF C44-9Ws and a KCS AC4400CW make up the power on this days Denver to Laurel manifest. On this day, the train got a track warrant from Denver all the way to Boulder. This is rather rare as nearly every train has to at least stop in Broomfield to throw a switch!

A standard cab GE unit straight out of the 1980's! GE's C40-8 competed with EMD's SD60s about 25 years ago. Here, a CSX-painted C40-8 helps out the HLAUDEN as it prepares to depart the Broomfield siding south toward Denver.

On the siding at Broomfield, the crew of this HLAUDEN (Laurel, MT to Denver, CO) is working to reassemble the train. The train is over 7,000 feet long and does not fit in the siding at Broomfield without cutting Nickel Street. Now that both trains it was meeting have passed, its time to rebuild and head to town.

October is nearing its end, but there are still some fall colors evident on trees in the area. Case in point are the trees near the Front Range Sub around MP 18. This HDENLAU (Denver, CO to Laurel, MT) is climbing Burke Hill, getting ready to pass underneath the Northwest Parkway.
