Right at milepost 14, maintenance crews are gathering to prepare for a briefing regarding the day's work. These maintenance crews will work 12+ hour days for eight days straight. Then, they will get seven straight days off. I certainly admire them for working a job with those types of hours.

Dozens of maintenance vehicles were stored in the siding at Leyden overnight. At the crack of dawn, crews were getting on board and firing up the vehicles, ready for the day's work ahead.

Talk about a true port-a-potty! When you are working on the rail, nature is still going to call. So multiple port-a-potty on wheels are hauled behind some of the equipment.

It is incredible the number of pieces of maintenance equipment that railroads have these days! One such piece of equipment, hauling a cart of equipment, heads west on the main just west of Leyden.

Weeks before the Moffat maintenance project began, a work train loaded with ties came along and drop off piles of ties along the rails. Today, with the ties ready to be replaced, these guys are picking up the ties and loading them onto a platform so they can be taken to the specific spot they are needed.

During the UP maintenance blitz on the Moffat, not only is the mainline getting some TLC, but sidings are as well. A crew is working to replace ties on the siding at Leyden. As you can probably tell, the tie replacement on the main is already completed and fresh ballast has been laid as well.

One of the many, many gangs currently working on the Moffat are in the siding at Leyden. Another gang is getting ready to head west out of the siding at Leyden. And the headlight from yet another gang is visible on Big Ten Loop! The light is near the top and to the left of the image.

A string of 12 units sits on the siding at the east end of Leyden. The crew tied the train (well, engines) down and was picked up by an eastbound coal train. I am unsure where the power was coming from or where it was headed.

Here it is! The last eastbound to run over the Moffat prior to a week of maintenance. The track is already out of service from Rocky all the way to Phippsburg. Work crews are slowly setting on the rails in order to start the maintenance. A lot of ties are going to be replaced through this stretch of track between now and October 8th.

After pickup up a crew from some light power tied down in the siding at Leyden, this eastbound is starting to roll toward the grade crossing at 80th Avenue. For a long time, UP would not run SD70ACes on coal loads. In the past few years, however, that policy has changed. It is good to see on leading this particular eastbound.

A pair of DPUs brings up the tail end of a coal load. The train will slow to stop at the east end of Leyden in order to pick up a crew on an eastbound light power move that is tying down in the siding.

The final eastbound to roll over the Moffat prior to a week-long shutdown for maintenance. This coal train loaded at the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch. You may note a relatively new radio tower to the right of the intermediate signal. This tower is used as part of PTC (Positive Train Control).

An eastbound manifest rolls through the grade crossing at Simms Street. There are some flaggers stationed at all the grade crossing through Arvada. Their job will be to protect grade crossing as maintenance equipment that doesn't trip the crossings come by.
