Something else I noticed that I found even more interesting is that the trucks are originally from an SD40, not an SD40-2. The truly amazing part of this is that the SD40-2 that led was not removed or replaced when it arrived. Here, the train is headed west through Barbara's Gulch. Upon inspection, major flat spots were discovered on the wheels. Major enough that the Superliner had to be set out at Rocky. As of this morning, three days later, the Superliner was still sitting at Rocky. It will likely remain here until the car shop can get a crew out and change the wheels out on site. Due to maintenance on the Moffat, the train has either be running through Wyoming, or running over the Moffat but departing Denver at 12:35pm. In the past, railroads would typically make every effort to have the signal on the right side (engineer's side) of the track as a train approached. That trend has changed now and intermediate signals are frequently a single mast. Such is the case here at milepost 14.5. UP is working hard to get PTC fully installed and online on the Moffat. With the Moffat currently closed for maintenance, its no surprise the intermediate signal is red. The Moffat is out of service and shutdown for daylight maintenance. All of UP's signals have been approach lit on the Moffat, meaning the signals are dark until a train is approaching. It is extremely great to see so much heavy maintenance going into the Moffat. Clearly UP recognizes the value of the Moffat and seeing maintenance like this ensures that the Moffat is not at risk of going the way of Tennessee Pass anytime in the near future.
