This year, Amtrak is giving names to all of the coach cars on the Ski Train to make it easier for passengers to remember which car is there, and find it on the platform. Passengers are working to get their equipment loaded, as well as themselves loaded, onto the train for the return trip to Denver. This P42DC was the leader on the train this morning, but is now the trailing unit for the journey back to Denver. Right now, the train is in between Fraser and Winter Park. You can see the exhaust the P42DCs are kicking up as they throttle up to accelerate. In the distance, the Winter Park Express Ski Train is currently making a reverse move. It will back out the west end of Fraser onto the main, the come east on the main to the Fraser station to pick up passengers. The station stop is nearly complete, and the lead P42DC has let out a couple of horn blasts, warning passengers it is time to climb on board. A decade ago, I never would have expected to see a pair of Amtrak trains stopped in Fraser! Once the Zephyr is gone, the Ski Train will pull up to the station on the main and pick up its passengers. Many people have gotten off the train for a fresh air (or smoke) brake. It is not too uncommon for someone on the train to get off and experience snow for the first time! An eastbound BNSF manifest was the last. Here, running right on time, the eastbound California Zephyr passes by the eastbound Winter Park Express Ski Train. The Zephyr is coming up to a red signal at the switch at the west end of Fraser cannot be locked up by the dispatcher. The Zephyr will have to take it into hand throw. Not everyone on the platform is headed to or coming from Fraser. Fraser is a fresh air stop, where passengers can step off the train for fresh air, a quick smoke, or a leg stretch. Rumor has it that Amtrak is working to install a heated platform here at Fraser, reducing the risk of someone slipping and falling on ice. The stop will last about 10 minutes as Fraser is a smoke stop, allowing passengers to get off the train for a few minutes for a smoke, fresh air, or just to walk around.
