A rails-eye view of the BNSF 7812. From this view, there is nothing really to indicate that the unit has even been patched! This is one of two units used on the Longmont Turn. The orange box above the plow is a FRED unit used on the local.

Power for the Longmont Switch idles away in the distance to the left while power for the Longmont Turn idles on the stub track in the foreground. Looks like some interesting, ummm, patchwork (?) on the number boards!

From what I've read, this was the very last Burlington Northern unit ever painted in cascade green! Apparently it was actually painted shortly after the BNSF merger. It was at the shops waiting to be painted (with a work order for this scheme) as the merger went through. It was one of two SD40-2's serving as power on the Longmont Turn.

If you've ever wondered why BNSF doesn't run coal trains from the Power River Basin down to the Joint Line via the Front Range Sub, this is without a doubt just one of many reasons why. This is the mainline through Longmont. Trains roll through here very slowly, blocking traffic at nearly 20 crossing as they go through. The Longmont Depot - still used by BNSF - is seen on the right.

One of my favorite four axle units on the rails today is certainly the GP60. I particularly like the unique and distinctive dynamic brake intakes. BNSF 8700 is shown here serving on the Longmont Switch, which runs north out of Longmont to Cheyenne. On this Saturday, the power was tied down (along with B40-8W #506) in Longmont.

This is one of those "artsy" type shots, but I really liked the setup. The shot is designed to demonstrate the quiet residential street of Atwood being stirred by the freight rolling right down the middle! The car to the left is a Galaxie 500.

A fairly typical consist for the southbound HLAUDEN as it moves slowly down Atwood Street. Trains here don't go much faster than 15-20 MPH and local residents get a nice wakeup call!

The southbound HLAUDEN heads right down the middle of Atwood Street in Longmont. While the tracks don't actually run down the middle of the asphalt, this is definitely some finest street running around. Houses line either side of Atwood Street.

Earlier in the day, these two units could be found on the point of the Valmont coal load. The units cut away from their train (the HPASSAG) at Broomfield to help pull the Valmont train over Westminster Hill. After returning to Broomfield, the power tied on and a short time later, continued south into town.

The newest and the oldest in BNSF paint schemes lead the HLAUDEN near Broomfield. An ES44AC in the New Image and an SD40-2 in H1 sit tied down on the main track north of Broomfield.

Don't worry, this shot isn't quite as dramatic as it might appear at first glance! The crew on the HLAUDEN died here at MP 16, tied the train down, and was picked up by a crew van. However, somebody forgot to flip the lights off before leaving!

At the north end of the siding of Broomfield, the Valmont coal train pulls as close to the switch as possible in order to clear Nickel Street...which it did by a car length or two. In the distance, the HLAUDEN had to tie its train down at MP 16 because its crew died!

Power from the HPASSAG heads north by Church Ranch Lake, leaving the Valmont coal load behind after helping the train up Westminster Hill. The power will clear up on the main at Broomfield, allowing the coal train to get a warrant into the siding at Broomfield.

Something of a unique view in this shot as two units pull away from the Valmont coal load to head back to Broomfield. The two units helped pull the coal load up Westminster Hill where it stalled out earlier in the day.

With a little help on the point, the Valmont coal train comes to a stop near Church Ranch Lake. Here, two units that helped pull the train up Westminster Hill will cut off the train and return to Broomfield. There, their train is waiting in the siding.
