Near the Westminster Mall on the Front Range Subdivision, the Valmont coal train stalled out! After an hour of waiting, two units from the HPASSAG - which tied down in Broomfield - showed up and tied onto the front of the train. After another hour of working, the train was finally ready to pull. Five units on the point of the Valmont coal train on the Front Range Sub...not something you see very often!

Power from the HPASSAG heads south - light - at Olde Wadsworth Blvd. The power is headed toward MP 8.5 to save the Valmont coal load. The Valmont train lost a unit and stalled out on Westminster Hill, blocking 80th Avenue.

The Valmont coal load stalled out on Westminster Hill. To lend a helping hand, the power from the HPASSAG (Pasco, WA to Saginaw, TX) cut away from its train and is heading south here around Church Ranch Lake.

This northbound HDENLAU just received a warrant from the Front Range Dispatcher to proceed from the south siding switch at Broomfield to the north siding switch at North Yard. That warrant spans about 65 miles! Two H2's and a "Catfish" lead the train just north (geographically west) of Broomfield.

There is a lot of junk to be found in this picture! And not just in the gondolas either. Now, I have nothing against BNSF...I have always appreciated that they try to match the colors of the unit they are patching when they apply a patch. But lately, they have been "scratching off" the BN herald from the nose of the SD70MACs. The nose of the unit looks was to plain now.

The lighting could have been better for this shot, but the clouds did come out looking extremely dramatic...I really like this shot because it depicts the three-way meet that took place. The HLAUDEN is about to leave the siding (to the right). The Longmont Turn is following the train into the siding with a Box 3 on its warrant. Meanwhile, the HDENLAU holds the main, waiting for the Longmont Turn to clear to it can continue north.

The southbound HLAUDEN has cleared up in the siding at Broomfield to wait for its counterpart - the HDENLAU - to come out of town. The dispatcher has informed the crew that they have a bit of wait, so the conductor has "gone for beans", meaning he will pick up a bit of lunch in town.

With instructions to clear the main track on the siding at Broomfield, this QDENTAC is only moving along at 10 MPH. The switch at the sound end of Broomfield must be aligned for the siding, so the conductor will have to get out. The DENTAC usually consists entirely of COFC (Containers on Flat Car), but on this day, a few cars carrying concrete ties were found on the front of the train.

On rather "blah" weather day, the southbound HLAUDEN is on the approach to the north siding switch Broomfield. The train will hold the main track at Broomfield to wait for the QDENTAC to take the siding at Broomfield. Note that the second and third units are both in the Warbonnet scheme. The peak in the background is Longs Peak. Also, the buildings in the background are a part of the StorageTek facility. The campus was recently purchased and will be rebuilt in the next three or four years.

This Valmont coal empty has a colorful consist on the point as the train makes its way through Westminster heading toward Denver. The train is passing underneath 92nd Avenue in the distance and is on the approach to Pierce Street.

A unique power lineup sitting on the siding at Broomfield on BNSF's Front Range Sub. A New Image ES44AC leads up a patched Espee AC4400CW (with a new yellow stripe along the frame) and a UP AC4400CW. The crew is untying the train in preparation of its departure for Denver.

This AC4400CW was originally lettered as TFM. However, since the KCS acquisition, the unit has been re-lettered as "KCS de Mexico". Note the "de Mexico" on the long hood as well as on the KCS herald on the front of the nose.

Something of a rare appearance here in Colorado was made by this CSX SD70ACe. The unit was part of the consist on the HLAUDEN on BNSF's Front Range Sub. The train was stopped and tied down on the siding at Broomfield. This particular unit is headed for home after being tested by Montana Rail Link for several days.

BNSF's HLAUDEN is tied down in the siding at Broomfield with a lot of power on the point. The CSX SD70ACe was being tested by Montana Rail Link earlier in the week. The train is waiting for a relief crew to take the train the rest of the way into Denver.

BNSF and UP share the responsibility for getting coal from the Rockies to the Valmont power plant in Boulder. The train runs with UP power from the mines to Denver. Then, BNSF adds a unit and the train runs to Boulder. The power the sits in Longmont until the train has been emptied and it's ready to return to town. In this shot, the power sits idling in Longmont, waiting to return to town.
