KCS 4121, leading the MNPDV, is dropping off 70 covered hoppers off the main here at Eaton. The rest of the train, consisting of double stacks and auto racks is sitting on the main to the left.

There is a relatively new industry in Eaton, CO that needs covered hoppers...a lot of covered hoppers. Not sure if these are sand hoppers for fracking. But UP's MNPDV is dropping off 70 such covered hoppers this morning.

With the recent merger between Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern, the amazing "Retro-Belle" paint scheme will be disappearing in the coming years. KCS units don't show up that often in Colorado as is, so it's great to get shots whenever possible.

UP's MNPDV has tied down half the train on the main (in the background) so that 70 covered hoppers can be dropped off here at Eaton, CO. There is a bit of color on the train today with KCS 4121 on the point.

A Canadian Pacific AC4400CW makes a rare Colorado appearance as it (and a BNSF ES44AC) push on the tail end the Denver-Provo. Incidentally, the Denver-Provo and its counterpart are the only manifests still running on the former Grande between Denver and Salt Lake City (well, Provo).

A rather rare visitor from the north takes a trip west on the Moffat as one of two DPUs on the tail end of BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest. I don't get the opportunity to get a shot of a Canadian Pacific unit too often.

This Denver-Provo is about to knock down an approach (yellow) signal at the east end of Rocky. Maintenance is in the process of clearing up on Big Ten, so the train will have a clear signal at the west end of Rocky.

The Moffat has seen a lot of foreign power lately. CSX, Norfolk Southern, Kansas City Southern, Canadian Pacific, and British Columbia have all appeared on the Moffat. And just within the last two weeks! Two of those railroads were on this train. Here, the CP unit is third out on the Denver-Provo.

If you look closely in this 400mm telephoto shot, not only can you see the tail end of the MRONY (with the CP DPU), but you can also see the four UP units on the point. They are located just to the left of the head of the intermediate (red) signal.

The manifests that run over the Moffat, whether it be UP or BNSF, are frequently dominated by tank cars. In fact, I would say that tank cars are likely the most common type of car found on the Moffat these days. Obviously coal hoppers would have been the obvious choice a few years ago, but the coal drought continues into 2017. In fact, at the time of this picture, there hadn't been a coal train (loaded or empty) on the Moffat in five days!

And it is our neighbors to the north for the assist! A Canadian Pacific ES44AC brings up the tail end of this 7000-foot long MRONY as the train glides east through Barbara's Gulch.

Here is a sight that you don't see every day! A Canadian Pacific unit rolls through the S-Curves at Blue Mountain on the Moffat. The unit is bringing up the rear of the eastbound Roper to North Yard manifest.

The rear DPU on the MRONY offer up a bit of foreign color! A Canadian Pacific ES44AC somehow found its way deep into Union Pacific territory. It is always great to catch something "out of the ordinary" on the rails you are used to chasing on.

Canadian Pacific units show up in Colorado on rare occasions. However, this is the first time I happened to see one on a UP coal train on the Moffat! It has seen better days, too. A lot of the paint is chipping and pealing. And the lower half of the unit is covered in grime.
