At Broomfield, a southbound Pasco to Saginaw manifest enters the siding at Broomfield while a rerouted coal empty sits on the main, patiently waiting. The coal empty would normally run up the Brush Sub in northeast Colorado, but track work caused a reroute up the Front Range Sub.

The southbound Laurel to Denver manifest slowly passes Valmont as seen from Legion Park. The second unit is BNSF 638, a former ATSF Warbonnet and one of the few such Warbonnets that was repainted in the Heritage 2 scheme!

There is a nice view of the flatirons in the background as the Loram rail grinder makes it way north at Independence Road in Boulder. The work train is just north of MP 32 and the Foothills overpass is visible in the background.

Just south of MP 32 and the Foothills underpass, this Loram rail grinder is slowly working its way north on the Front Range Sub. On this particular trip, only the rails on curves were being ground. The grinder was skipping right over the straight stretches.

In between switches on the main in Boulder, this Loram rail grinder is making its way north. The worker at the end of the train watches for any fires that might accidentally be started as a result of grinding and extinguishes them with one of the water canons on board. The cars on the siding have no power and will be picked up later in the day by the southbound HLAUDEN.

It's been quite awhile since I've seen two B-units working on a coal train! And I don't know that I've every (personally) seen two B40-8W's working together on the Front Range Sub before. There are only 81 such units on BNSF's roster (at the time of the photo) and these two looked good together.

Valmont Power Plant in Boulder receives its coal from a joint effort between UP and BNSF. UP hauls the coal from the mines in the Colorado high country down to Denver, where the train is turned over to BNSF. BNSF takes the train to Boulder via the Front Range Sub and delivers the loaded hoppers to the power plant. On this particular afternoon, two B40-8W's switch some cars around at the plant.

On my way into work, I was surprised to find this Laurel to Denver manifest tied down in the siding at Boulder. Typically, the train is too long to fit at Boulder. First up was a BNSF C44-9CW, then an Oakway SD60, and finally a Ferromex ES44DC.

A sign of the conditions of the day, snow blows off the ballast and the cars as this northbound HDENLAU-07 moves quickly north near Lower Church Lake. The train was moving at 48 MPH on the approach to Broomfield.

BNSF 8230 has just conquered the rather steep (albeit short) 2% grade in between Broomfield and Superior. The train will now descend down a 1.5% to 1.65% grade through Boulder and into Longmont.

That unit on the point kind of looks like a CEFX SD90MAC leaser, but in fact it is one of the dirtiest Warbonnet's I have ever seen. BNSF 8230, an SD75M, leads the northbound HDENLAU-24 through Westminster near 80th Avenue on its journey northward.

BNSF 5497 and BNSF 5165 south lead an empty unit Sulphur Train (GBNVGAT) through the Restricted Limits Clear Creek just north of Utah Junction. The red castle in the background was home to Westminster University starting in 1908 (it was striving to be the "Princeton of the West"). However, World War I shut the school down a mere nine years later in 1917. The city of Harris, CO changed its name to Westminster in honor of the university. Today, the castle is home to a private Christian school (K-12).
