Since coal tends to dominate the scene in Denver, AC units tend to be quite a bit more common that DC units. Still, DC units find their way to town on other trains such as manifests. This C44-9W sits quietly outside the North Yard engine shop, the victim of some light "tagging" on the long hood. This particular unit started life wearing the Chicago North Western lightning scheme.

This shot looks east along RTD's future "East Line" commuter line from Union Station to DIA. The shot looks at the Havana Street grade crossing. Although no wire has been erected yet, most of the catenary poles are up along either side of the tracks. UP's Limon Sub is off to the left.

Construction of RTD's "East Line", the commuter line from Union Station to Denver International Airport, is reported as being 60% complete. Just west of Havana Street, you can see that the westbound track (to the right) is fully ballasted. The eastbound track (to the left/center) has largely been laid, but no ballast has been added yet.

During the end of its active life, DRGW 3011 was relegated to "B-Unit" status. This essentially meant that the unit was not capable of leading a consist and could only be used as a trailing unit. While it certainly needs some work, the classic GP30 cab looks mighty fine from the side. Good to know that one of these will be preserved.

Rio Grande GP30 #3011 spent 32 years on the active roster. It was built in May 1962 and worked until 1994, six years after the DRGW/Espee merger. It is now 52 years old and sits quietly next to the roundhouse at the Colorado Railroad Museum. One day, it'll have its turn at restoration!

At the back of the long hood of GP30 DRGW 3011, we find a fan used as part of the cooling of the prime mover. Although in this case, it has probably been close to 20 years since this fan has been used!

A lot of the components of DRGW 3011, such as the headlights, class lights, number boards and plow, have been removed. The team at the museum will keep them safe and out of the elements until such a time as the unit is restored to look like it did in its glory days!

The gauge on the fuel tank of DRGW 3011 (on the conductor's side) has lost its needle! Not that it is needed as the 2,600 gallon tank is no doubt dry as a bone.

20 years ago, in 1994, Espee retired GP30 DRGW 3011. In 1995, they sold the unit to OmniTRAX who stored the unit in Wichita, KS until 2000. In mid-2001, it was moved to Loveland, CO where it sat for another year. In 2002, it was donated by OmniTRAX to the Colorado Railroad Museum. 10 years ago, in 2004, the unit was moved to the museum. For the time being, it sits on the east side of the roundhouse, awaiting its turn at restoration.

Time always marches on and, as it does, change inevitably happens. When the Rio Grande Zephyr stopped running in April 1983, the future of Rio Grande's last few F9s was very uncertain. In 1984, they were used on slow, heavy slag trains in maintenance service. Fortunately in the end, DRGW 5771 (F9A) and DRGW 5762 (F9B) found a home at the Colorado Railroad Museum. There, they underwent a restoration project in which the four stripe scheme was applied to them. Ironically, neither had ever worn the four stripe scheme prior to arriving at the museum!

Now that is a lot of concrete ties! Each (full) stack looks to have 90 ties. A very quick (and extremely rough) estimate indicates there are probably over 40,000 ties here, ready to be used! At 20" between each tie (about right for EMU commuter rail), these ties could cover 12 miles of single track or 6 miles of double track. Actually not all that much when you think about it.

All tied up? Thousands of concrete ties lay stacked up, ready for use in the construction of the RTD Gold Line from Union Station to Arvada. The line is scheduled to open in 2016.

Regardless of the paint scheme, I really love seeing good old spartan cabs hanging around North Yard! One of these units in particular has been around North Yard for a very long time. UP 1349 was once DRGW 3128, one of the last GP40-2s delivered to the Grande. It was patched on May 16, 2005 and received a full repaint in April 2007. At that time, the Mars light was removed and air conditioning was added.

With two rail yards in Denver, it seems possible that North Yard could be deemed redundant and abandoned in favor of 36th Street Yard. Then again, the opposite could be said. Regardless, I am grateful that the rails representing Rio Grande are still being used beneath 48th Avenue.
