Yard Shots Ski Train
In the past, the Ski Train has used the Passenger Lead and the Buck to perform its wye move and turn around. This time, the Ski Train backed down the inbound lead toward 36th Street. An interesting shot of the train with Coors Field in the distance.

It's not easy getting a shot of Amtrak using the Passenger Lead to back into Union Station. This is because #6 (the eastbound Zephyr) is the only one of the two Zephyr's to use it. And it is typically well past nightfall by the time it is using it. But arriving 45 minutes early was key in helping me get this shot! The Zephyr is backing down the lead into Union Station.

The units on the right are frequently used to transfer cars between 36th Street and North Yard. The units on the left, on the other hand, switch cars at 36th Street.

Is there something a little bit odd looking about this GP50? The cab perhaps? You'd be correct! This is one of only five such units built and sent to Burlington Northern. The GP50 is equipped with a "crew cab" that can comfortably seat five crew members. I've been very fortunate with these units as this is the third of the five that I've manage to shoot!

As a result of the current economic recession, railroads are finding that they have boat loads of excess railcars that aren't being used. So, Union Pacific strung together over eighty box cars and shoved them 15 miles up the Boulder Industrial Lead away from Denver. The tracks here haven't been used in so long, a few grade crossing had to be rebuilt to the cars here!

A pair of GP15-1s and an SD60M are hanging out near the yard office. The GP15-1s are currently running on transfers from 36th Street to North Yard and back. The SD60M was set to leave on the MDVSI-18 later in the afternoon.

The older units that are being placed into storage or are flat out being retired are being replaced with these! The GE ES44AC is becoming more and more prevalent on coal trains everywhere. Quite the change from five years ago when SD70MACs ruled all BNSF coal trains.

An SD40-2 and a GP38-2...nothing too terribly exciting. However, with the slow down in the economy and an increase in the number of units railroads are placing in storage, who knows how much longer these two units - currently used for switching - will be online!

A good-looking Heritage C44-9W. This is probably my favorite BNSF scheme (save for the Warbonnet!) ... the H2 isn't bad, but it has a bit too much yellow for my taste. I must admit the New Image is growing on my too, but this is the best.

One of my favorite engines...the SD45-2! Actually, while it still looks like an SD45-2 on the outside, the insides have been completely "revamped" and it is now an SD40-2 under the hood. A 16-cylinder engine and 3,000 horsepower. Still looks pretty sharp in the New Image scheme though.

Two DPU units on the tail end of a southbound coal load push hard on Main Two. Meanwhile, the Salt Mine switch job pulls on a string of cars on the right side of the shot.

This is the engine that was beat out by General Electric's P42DC to replace the F40PH. Amtrak received several of these units for use (as the name implies) in California. It is a rare find to find one of these outside that west coast state.

A rare shot of the back end of an F59PH! This unit came up the Joint Line earlier in the day. It is currently being placed at the House while waiting to depart.

A site that you don't exactly see on a daily basis! BNSF's HKCKDEN (Kansas City - Denver) picked up an Amtrak California F59PH from the testing center outside Pueblo. This F59 came east from California on the Zephyr last September.

Talk about a nice sampling of paint schemes! A C44-9W wears the original Heritage scheme while a second C44-9W sports the Heritage II scheme. Then, on the tail end, an ES44DC has the New Image scheme.
