It turns out that these units were most recently used on the Valmont coal train. UP runs the train from the mines to Denver; BNSF runs the train from Denver to the power plant in Boulder. Upon reaching Denver, the crew tied the train down at the south end of Rennicks Yard where it waits for a fresh crew to take it south on the Joint Line. The bases for the turbines are shipped via rail from California. The bases are sent in the form of unit trains every couple of weeks (give or take). Here is one such train near the York Street grade crossing. It awaits a fresh crew to take it east on the KP into Kansas.
