While double stack intermodal trains are a "dime a dozen" on lines like the Transcon and the Overland, they are far less common in the Denver-Metro area. Indeed, they are probably one of the least photographed types of trains I have. However, BNSF does run a Z-Train between Denver and Chicago (and back) six days a week. The eastbound version typically departs Denver shortly after sunrise in the summer months. Here, an ES44C4 and a pair of C44-9Ws lead the hot shot east by the glass reflection of Barr Lake.

After meeting the morning westbound Zephyr at the east end of the 31st Street Yard, the hottest train in or out of Denver, BNSF's ZDENCHI, is rolling by the Suncor Oil Refinery toward the diamond at Sand Creek. BNSF's Brush Sub crosses over UP's Greeley Sub at the diamond (the track in the foreground) which takes UP from Denver to Cheyenne. A trio of elephant-style GEs lead the high priority east.

A single BNSF ES44C4 brings up the tail end of an eastbound UP oil train. This ES44C4 is a "Tier 4 Credit" locomotive. After the Tier 4 emissions standards went in to effect, railroads had some carbon credits built up and could use those as credit again Tier 3 locomotives.

The closest BNSF has come to offering up any type of heritage unit are these ES44ACs. Ten of them sport this special scheme that features the heralds of the railroads that merged to former Burlington Northern, plus the herald for Santa Fe.

The city of Arvada has around 125,000 residents and is zoned almost entirely residential. UP's Moffat Tunnel Sub cuts through the middle of Arvada neighborhoods, paralleling Oberon Road in this particular shot. The Rockies that the train just conquered rise high on the horizon.

BNSF's eastbound Provo-Denver manifest glides east down the long straight stretch of track east of Leyden. The train has crossed both 80th Avenue and Simms Street, and is now crossing both Kipling Street and 72nd Avenue.

A pair of BNSF DPUs are about to disappear in to Tunnel 1. If you look in the distance, you can see the head end of the train crossing over CO-72 at the base of Coal Creek Canyon.

An SD70ACe leads a pair of GEs east toward the west portal of Tunnel 1. The train will have a "straight shot" all the way down to Prospect Jct to ensure the crew can get there before running on of time on their 12-hour "hours of service" clock.

The crew on this BNSF manifest has 90 minutes left to work before hitting their hours of service. Dispatch asked the crew if they could make it the 24 miles down to Prospect Jct in the time they have left if they get a straight shot. The crews response was "absolutely". So, the train is departing the siding at Plain on a clear (green) signal.

BNSF's eastbound Provo-Denver manifest has been holding off the grade crossing so as to avoid blocking local traffic while waiting for the Zephyr to show up. Now that the Zephyr is here, the manifest will start rolling toward the east switch at Plain.

Despite how it might appear, this is actually not a meet between a westbound oil train and an eastbound BNSF manifest. Both of these trains are actually eastbound. The oil train has slow-rolled on the main at Plain, allowing the BNSF manifest to catch up to it on the siding.

The sun is not quite high enough yet to fully light all of the power sitting at BNSF's engine facility ("the house"). Of note is the C44-9W in the foreground on the left that appears to have been sold to Kansas City Southern!

This is just about the best lighting you could ask for! We are full on in the Golden Hour as this westbound BNSF manifest pulls on to the main, out of the siding at Leyden. Intense afternoon thunderstorms create an extremely dark eastern sky, adding the the color and contrast of the scene.
