A pair of BNSF GEs bring up the tail end of a westbound coal load. The DPUs are crossing over the former Rock Island line that led to North Yard. The line is now owned by the Denver Rock Island, a short line that operates a few miles of track in the Denver area. Also note the newest looking bridge in the distance. This bridge is indeed quite new, carrying RTD's N-Line commuter rail traffic from Denver Union Station out to the suburb of Thornton.

A northbound UP local slows to a stop at a red signal at Sand Creek. It's path is currently blocked by a westbound BNSF coal load, crossing over the diamond at Sand Creek on the BNSF Brush Sub, underneath the I-270 overpass. Once the coal load clear, the local will still have to wait a bit as a southbound UP manifest switches some cars out at an industry off in the distance.

A westbound BNSF coal load has crosses UP's Greeley Sub at the diamond at Sand Creek, and is now passing the Suncor oil refinery in Commerce City. This is definitely one of the most industrial parts of Denver.

Weather-wise, it is a perfect day in the Denver-Metro area. The apparently haze is not weather related (per se), but rather smoke from numerous wildfires burning far to the north in Canada. The jet stream is currently bringing the smoke down to Colorado as this BNSF Denver-Provo makes its way up and around Big Ten Loop.

A westbound BNSF moves slowly through the siding at Rocky, passing by a track tamper that is holding on the main track. UP is currently adding new ballast in the area, and maintenance is out to work on it as time permits between trains. Note the fourth unit, a GP39-3, rebuilt from a Santa Fe GP39.

This westbound BNSF Denver-Provo has to run in and out of the siding at Leyden in order to get around some maintenance equipment that was holding the main. Indeed, you can see some of the maintenance in the distance. The train is crossing over Indiana Street on a bridge the city of Arvada is hoping to replace in order to widen Indiana Street from two to four lanes.

Helper, once a mecca for tunnel motors, is now quiet most days. This Saturday offers a bit of action, a break in the quietness. Crews work on constructing a new platform for Amtrak at the depot. Crews work to put a ballast train back together after cutting out mid-trains wing helpers which sit on the yard track next to Main 1. A BNSF manifest starts the climb up Soldier Summit, a pair of DPUs bringing up the tail end of the train on Main 1.

Most of the oil trains that run on the Moffat these days are headed to (if empty) or coming from (if loaded) this transloading facility located off the siding at Wash on the eastern edge of the town of Wellington, UT. You can see there are multiple tracks for loading oil in to tank cars here. On the siding at Wash on the left side of the shot, a BNSF manifest sits with the head end power detached. The head end power is dropping off four tank cars here at the facility.

In the siding of Wash, BNSF cuts the first four cars, all tank cars, away from the rest of the train. The tank cars will be spotted at the oil transload facility located here at Wash. After setting out the tank cars, the crew will put the train back together and continue west.

An SD70ACe and an ES44AC bring up the tail end of this Denver-Provo manifest. The head end, now out of view, is wrapping around toward the east end of the siding of Cedar. This portion of the desert has a roughly 1% climb up toward the start of Soldier Summit.

One of my favorite shots of this particular trip to the Utah desert has BNSF's Denver-Provo manifest climbing through a long S-Curve between Grassy and Cedar, the Book Cliffs offering a beautiful and somewhat dramatic backdrop.
