Amtrak's short Winter Park Express Ski Train passes through a very wintery scene on the main track at Plain, just east of Rainbow Cut. There are 266 passengers on board the train this morning, ready for a fun day on the slopes at Winter Park.

Since last weekend, both P42DCs of the Winter Park Express were changed out. AMTK 142 and 192 were in charge of the five car train last weekend. This morning, AMTK 153 and 27 are running on the Ski Train. It is a bit late (due to a mechanical issue), but is now charging west through the OS at East Leyden.

With a winter blizzard finally moving out of the area overnight, the sky is mostly clear and the temperatures are rising. It is 22°F (-6°C) this morning, an increase of nearly 30° since yesterday morning. However, the wind has also picked up a bit, blowing a lot of the freshly fallen snow around. The Zephyr is contributing a bit, kicking up snow in its own wake as it proceeds west.

After several days of sub-zero temperatures, things are finally warming up in the Denver area as it is a balmy 22°F (-6°C) out. The westbound Zephyr is running a little bit late after a UP yard job had issue at North Yard and the main was briefly blocked. But the train is hustling west now, creating a blizzard of its own in its wake.

Winter has settled in in a major way across the plains and into the Rockies. Evidence of the heavy snow fall is quite apparent as the front of AMTK 190 is covered in snow, and is indeed kicking up fresh powder as it approach the east end of Leyden at track speed.

The Zephyr has not run east of Denver (to Chicago) since last Thursday night. Severe weather on the plains has resulted in Amtrak canceling the Zephyr between Denver and Chicago. #6 has been laying over in Denver for the night, then departing west the next morning as #5. AMTK 190 leads the westbound Zephyr on the approach to Leyden, the same unit and train that came east as #6 last night.

Amtrak added two holiday runs for the Winter Park Express this year. Today, MLK Day, is the first "bonus" day for the Ski Train. It is -7°F (-22°C) and the snow is falling as the train approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive. The orange object on the front of AMTK 192 is actually a protective cover that goes over the coupler. It prevents snow and ice from building up in the knuckle, making it easier when AMTK 192 has to be attached to the train in Fraser after running around it for the trip back to Denver.

The westbound California Zephyr departed on time, but got held up at C&S Junction due to a switch that would not lock up. Now running around 25 minutes late, the train makes its way through the curves on the approach to Blue Mountain Drive.

When Amtrak started running the Winter Park Express again a few years ago, they seemed to make an effort to include a specially-painted (heritage) unit on the train. Not the case this year, as AMTK 142 and AMTK 192 lead the train west, just west of Tunnel 1.
