The sun has only been up for about 20 minutes as the Winter Park Express Ski Train rolls west on the siding at Eisele (Clay). A 6,000-foot manifest is holding on the main track, getting ready to continue east on a clear (green) signal at the east end.

"Diverging Approach, Fireclay". The westbound Winter Park Express just called a Diverging Approach (red over yellow) as it enters in to the siding at Eisele (Clay) to met a UP eastbound manifest holding on the main.

UP's MGJNY has slowed to a stop on the main track at Eisele (Clay). The Winter Park Express is climbing out of Rocky and will wrap around Big Ten, entering the siding at Eisele (Clay) to meet the manifest. The manifest has 101 cars and will not fit between switches, so the Winter Park Express will briefly have to stop to wait for it to clear the west switch.

The morning Winter Park Express, running about 15 minutes late (and seen here around 22 minutes after sunrise), heads west. The train just passed the high/wide detector at MP 8.4. The detector specifically checks to see if anything is sticking off the side or if there is a car that is too high to fit through the tunnels in the tunnel district. If something is sticking out, it'll break the wire on the detector and inform the dispatcher (and the train, via radio). No problems this morning though!

A fresh layer of powder fell overnight, covering the landscape. A pair of P42DCs pull the five-car Winter Park Express toward the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Drive. Amtrak annulled both Amtrak 5 and 6 yesterday, so there will be no Zephyrs through Colorado today.

The headlight from AMTK 171 lights up a handful of snowflakes falling on the tail end of a very minor overnight storm. The Winter Park Express has its five cars in tow as it heads west for Winter Park.

After arriving 12 1/2 hours late in Chicago, it took Amtrak a little time to get the train ready for the trip west. It departed Chicago nearly five hours late the previous day, and departed Denver just over five hours late today. Here, clouds are keeping the train in shadows as it leaves west out of Leyden.

The eastbound Zephyr is running 12 1/2 hours late as it approaches the west switch of Tonville. The train departed Emeryville, CA almost 10 hours late, and lost more time enroute. The train is trying to make up time as best it can, moving along at track speed as it passes by the frozen pond. Three P42DCs are on the point today, and in addition to the baggage car, there are Superliners in tow.

The Winter Park Express is about five minutes late after briefly getting held up at Utah Jct. It is just east of the grade crossing at Kipling Street in Arvada, and the overcast skies still reflect some great colors about 10 minutes after sunrise.

The westbound Zephyr makes a fairly rare afternoon departure from the Denver area as it is running 5 hours and 15 minutes late. Trying to make up time, the train is moving at track speed parallel to Oberon Road in Arvada. Oberon Lake #1 is visible on the opposite side of the tracks.

The westbound Zephyr is 5 hours and 15 minutes late today, after experiencing some issue (not sure exactly what) between Lincoln, NE and Hastings, NE the previous night. The train is crossing 66th Avenue in Arvada, about 10 miles west of Union Station, hidden amidst the skyline in the distance.

There is plenty of snow to be had on the ground (and hanging in the trees) in the Tunnel District as the westbound Winter Park Express heads toward the east portal of Tunnel 8. Not far behind the train, you can clearly see the west portal of Tunnel 7.

Just east of Tunnel 3, the westbound Winter Park Express enters in to view from a cut as it makes its way west through a powdery Tunnel District. High in the distance, clouds work to try to push their way over the mountains and out toward the plains.
