High winds and snow plows worked together to pile up some snow on the right of way at the grade crossing at Tolland. Snow that the eastbound Winter Park Express has no problem bursting through! Amtrak F40PH #406 knocks the white stuff out of the way on the main.

Running roughly 20 minutes late, the eastbound Winter Park Express approaches the grade crossing at Tolland in relatively low light. The train was delayed a bit as it had to run through the Moffat Tunnel at 15 MPH.

To help advertise the Winter Park Express (the new Ski Train), Amtrak applied some wraps to three Superliners and the trailing F40PH. Hopefully, the wrap will help in attracting customers to the train, helping it to be successful. The train will run on weekends through March 26, 2017.

This spot at the east end of Plain is one of my favorite places to shoot a morning westbound. Sadly, it will only be usable for another few years (at most) as a handful of pine trees are slowly growing up toward obstruction of the scene. For the time being, however, the westbound Winter Park Express (on its second run) heads down the main at Plain.

The westbound Winter Park Express knocks down the signal at the east end of Plain. High morning winds are causing a lot of snow to get whipped up and blown around.

The westbound Winter Park Express climbs the hill out of Rocky toward Big Ten Curve. A pair of P42DCs lead the train on the west end, while a single F40PH brings up the rear. That F40PH will be used to operate the train back east as the train is unable to be turned. The wye in Tabernash is out of service.

Back when the old Ski Train was running, the train would be wyed (turned around) at Tabernash. Eight years later, however, finds the wye at Tabernash out of service. Amtrak's solution is to place AMTK 406 on the east end of the train. This former F40PH is now a NPCU, or Non-Powered Cab Unit. It still has a control stand in the cab, but no prime mover. Instead, when the engineer works the controls, the commands are sent to the P42DCs on the west end of the train. So the train will actually be pushed up the grade from Fraser to Winter Park, but the engineer will still be on the east end of the train.

In order to ensure the Winter Park Express makes it up to Winter Park and back, Amtrak is using a pair of P42DCs in front of the eight Superliners. Just moments after the sun peeked over the horizon, the Ski Train approaches the Sheridan Blvd underpass.

It is 8°F outside and there is plenty of snow on the ground. Excellent conditions for the first run of the new Ski Train! The old Ski Train was operated by Ansco (Phil Anschutz's company). The new Ski Train, known as the Winter Park Express, is operated by Amtrak directly. Here, the first run of the Ski Train heads west on Main 2 past the RTD Sheridan Station.

This shot feels like it may have been taken somewhere back east. At some cold station in New York or Pennsylvania. In the 1980s. But no, this is indeed a picture from Denver Union Station in 2017. An Amtrak F40PH, complete with red class lights, sits on Track 5, ready for the start of the Winter Park Express (Ski Train).

It has been a long time since you could regularly find an F40PH on the tracks behind Union Station. But, at least for this winter season, you will be able to find one here regularly! AMTK 406 is being used, as you can see, on the Winter Park Express this year. The new Ski Train! The first Ski Train of any type in eight years.

In order to accommodate everyone's skies for the tip to Winter Park, Amtrak got a lot of these ski racks and put them in the baggage portion of the Coach/Baggage cars used on the train. That will allow for quick loading in Denver and unloading on the new platform in Winter Park. And vice versa in the afternoons!

Incredible how quickly things can change. While Union Station (the building) hasn't changed, the surrounding buildings and the tracks behind it in "train hall" have changed immensely in the last ten years! With six tracks (1-3 and 6-8) devoted to commuter rail, two tracks (4 and 5) are reserved for non-commuter trains such as Amtrak and, as you see here, the new Ski Train.

The slopes! Says it all...Amtrak put some "wraps" around three of the Superliner that are being used on the Winter Park Express; the new Ski Train.
