When this coal load derailed at the west switch of Hudson, it broke apart in to three pieces. Here, the front third (to the right) stayed on the tracks. The middle third can be seen back a bit. The last few cars on that section derailed, but stayed upright. The final section of the train had the most cars derail (and about 20 of them fell on their side).

BNSF 8802 was the lead unit on this westbound coal load that derailed at the west end of Hudson. Here, a fresh crew has arrived to assist in the cleanup operation. Later in the afternoon, the crew would take the front portion of the train that didn't derail down to the siding of Tonville.

Coal mixes with dirt, which mixes with steel a wood, among the wreckage of a derail coal train at the west switch of Hudson. The derailment was causing a lot of cars on I-76 to slow down and check out the scene. Local PD was patrolling the shoulder, keeping cars from stopping on the shoulder.

Cars lay on their sides...or in some cases, are piled on top of one another...after a westbound coal train derailed at the west end of Hudson. The road in the foreground is I-76. The derailment took place on the west edge of Hudson, CO.

When this BNSF coal train derailed, cars "accordioned" (as they often do in derailments), resulting in cars piled on top of cars and some of the cars perpendicular to the track. Or, to where the track was! Must have been an amazing site to see when this happened.

A couple of wheel sets and ties rest, largely buried in coal, after the westbound coal load derailed at the west switch of Hudson on the BNSF Brush Sub. Most likely these hoppers will be sent to the scrapper (if not scrapped onsite) as it is unlikely they will be able to be repaired.

When this westbound coal load derailed, it didn't only take out 25-30 hoppers and track, but it also took out a switch at the signal at the west end of Hudson. You can see the signal mast (with its signal heads now missing) here, twisted among the derailed hoppers.

These hopper cars almost aren't recognizable as hopper cars after a derailment at the west switch of Hudson. There is a certainly amount of dark irony in the advertised "Rapid Discharge" on the side of one of the hoppers. Surprisingly, it appears that most of the coal stayed in that particular hopper.

14,259-foot Long Peak stands tall in the distance, offering a nice backdrop to a less-than-nice scene in the foreground. A westbound coal load derailed at the west switch of Hudson, resulting in this pileup of 25-30 cars.

A pair of horses look for food in a field, indifferent to the pileup of coal hoppers in the distance. In addition to the mangled hoppers, note the welded rail, twisted and looping, in the middle of the frame.

While somewhere around 20 cars involved in a derailment on the Brush Sub fell completely over (many of which were twisted beyond recognition), about 10 came off the tracks but were able to stay upright.

A rough start to Spring 2015 for BNSF on the Brush Sub. A broken wheel on this coal train caused 25-30 cars to derail on the west switch at Hudson. Most of the derailed cars fell over (and some appeared to be banged up well beyond repair), but a few of the derailed cars stayed upright. You can see the crews to the left, assembling and preparing to go to work to get the track reopened.

Got coal? There was quite a bit of it laying on the ground at the west switch of Hudson after this westbound BNSF coal load derailed. There were no injuries and no engines were involved. The derailment did, however, take out the west switch at Hudson as well as the eastbound signal. Crews definitely have their work cut out for them!

The train loaded at the Black Thunder Mine (in the Powder River Basin) and was headed for Amarillo, TX.

A derailment at the west switch of Hudson has two sets of toppled over cars. 20 or so cars piled up badly (in a short distance, to the right) while another four fell over (but didn't pile as much, to the left).

This was the worst part of a 25-30 car derailment at the west switch of Hudson. Roughly 20 hoppers piled up together and tumbling down off the south side of the track.
