While this is technically south of Greenland, CO, the months of May and June are typically the only time of year when this area actually lives up to the name of being a green land. A CN-led grain train is currently stopped in The Sag, waiting for its turn to head south at Palmer Lake. A northbound is visible in the distance on Main 2.

After the coal load ahead got a signal to continue south into the single track territory of the Joint Line south of Palmer Lake, this CN-led train train is now sitting in The Sag, waiting for its turn to continue south. After several hours of thunderstorms, there was a 10 minute break in the clouds, allowing for some fantastic sunlight to break through.

CN 3321 is currently facing a red intermediate signal at MP 45.8. There is a coal train ahead that is currently stopped in The Sag, waiting for two northbounds. As such, the crew has the headlight on dim, and is patiently waiting.

As a fairly significant summer thunderstorm rolls east, a CN-led, BNSF grain train crosses East Plum Creek, Spruce Mountain Road, and Fox Farm Road on the old Santa Fe bridge, which still sports a faded Santa Fe label and herald. Shots from the north side of the bridge are hard to get due to lighting, but the overcast skies made it possible on this June 1st.

CN 3321, an AC44C6M (rebuild) crosses over East Plum Creek on the bridge at MP 26.60 on Main 1 on the Joint Line. The train is following a coal load, and is actually making better time than the coal load, so the grain train will make a few stops at (red) intermediate signals as it continues south.

This unit grain train originated in North Dakota on May 27th and is making its way south and west toward Barstow, CA. A nice little bonus is a Canadian National leader. Here, at the Evans Ave RTD station, the train is tied down and awaiting a crew that is currently enroute.

This southbound grain train had been tied down at Denver and was originally not supposed to be called until around 5:45pm. However, BNSF changed things up and it was called at 11am! I was up at Crescent when I got the news, and I immediately headed south so i could get some shots of the northern visitor.

I do not have many shots of SD70M-2s, so it is great to pick up one more with this shot. The SD70M-2 was not widely popular, with only 331 being produced between 2005 and 2011. The majority of the units went to Canadian National and Norfolk Southen. None of those 331 units went to western railroads (UP, BNSF, etc). By comparison, over 2,000 SD70ACes have been produced and are still in the EMD catalog in 2024.

CN 8878 makes a rare appearance in Colorado, bringing up the tail end of an eastbound coal load. At first glance, you might (reasonably) assume that this is an SD70ACe. However, it is actually an SD70M-2. Noteworthy as this unit has DC traction motors...something that is almost never heard of on coal trains.

UP's MNPDV (North Platte to Denver 36th Street Yard manifest) crosses an irrigation ditch that is filled near the brim as it heads south on the main. This irrigation ditch branches off from the South Platte River and ultimate feeds in to Barr Lake along I-76.

Just past the intermediate south of Rolla, CN 2724 and train start to pull south on UP's Greeley Sub mainline. The train has just dropped off a string of autoracks at Rolla, UP's auto transload facility in Denver.

A visitor from the north! This Canadian National C44-9W is spending some time on UP rails, leading the MNPDV (North Platte to Denver manifest) south on the Greeley Sub.

The conductor on the MNPDV offers up a friendly wave to the photographer, reaching out of a unit rather rare to Colorado. A CN C44-9W (original Illinois Central) is on the point, paired with a UP SD70M for this southbound just south of Ft Lupton.

South of Ft Lupton, at MP 23, UP's MNPDV-24 heads south on the Greeley Sub with a Canadian National (originally an Illinois Central) C44-9W leading. The train consists of double stacks at the front and autoracks at the back. There is a lone tank car cut in to the middle of the autoracks, apparently by mistake!

The unit second out on this special unit covered hopper train tied down in the siding at Barr is a unit we don't see too often in Colorado. This is an SD70M-2, the DC-version of its far-more-common brother, the SD70ACe. Neither BNSF nor UP have an SD70M-2s on the roster, which is why it is a rather rare catch in Colorado.
