The former yard at Green River, small though it once was, has now been largely converted into a dirt maintenance of way and storage area for Union Pacific. A couple of oil Rio Grande signals and several other control boxes sit in the quite morning.

A look at the end of this very old Rio Grande tank car located near the east switch of Eisele (Clay). There are two reporting marks that have clearly been hand written on the car: DRGW X-2901 and DRGW X-2906. I'm not sure which is correct, if either of them!

Near the east switch of Eisele (Clay) is this very old Rio Grande tank car. It is now partially buried as it has most likely been here for at least a century.

A Rio Grande Ski Train sticker has been applied to the sides of the nose of both AMTK 75 and AMTK 146, the current power on the Winter Park Express Ski Train. A nice homage to the Rio Grande and Anschutz Ski Trains.

It is only a little past 2pm, yet it feels as though we are only minutes away from sunset, even though sunset is still several hours off. The short days of December along with the high Colorado Rockies to the west result in very short days. Basking in the afternoon sunlight is the UP Colorado Springs yard job, sitting just north of the Colorado Springs depot.

A former Rio Grande caboose sits in the Colorado Springs yard, awaiting the next yard job and/or local assignment. I refer to this as a "former" caboose because it is now referred to on the railroad as a "shoving platform". The doors have been bolted and all the windows inside have been blacked out. Crews are not allowed inside. It is strictly used as a place for brakemen to ride when making switches moves so they do not have to hang off the sides of freight cars. This shoving platform has been assigned to Colorado Springs for over a decade.

It had been many years since I had taken any shots of DRGW 5771 at the Colorado Railroad Museum. The weather was perfect, so I figured it was time to get a recent shot! DRGW 5771 was, of course, the final FA unit to be retired off Rio Grande's roster. It ran on the Rio Grande Zephyr until its end in April 1983. It spent 1984 working on low priority work trains before being completely retired. The good folks at the Colorado Railroad Museum have restored it in Rio Grande four stripe paint scheme. Ironically enough, the F9A itself never wore this paint scheme. But it still looks mighty good!

A close up look of the cab and front end of DRGW 5401 as it rests at the Colorado Railroad Museum. Unlike all but one other of the 73 SD40T-2s Rio Grande had, DRGW 5401 is being preserved in its Rio Grande colors. Sister unit DRGW 5371 has also been preserved, resting at the Utah State Railroad Museum in Ogden, UT.

The Colorado Railroad Museum has done a lot to restore DRGW 5401 to look like it did during its glory days on the Rio Grande. The unit had been patched by Union Pacific, its class lights and MARS light removed, and it was covered in graffiti. Today, the light package has been restored and the graffiti has been removed. Such a great job getting it back to its prime.

DRGW 3011 was donated to the Colorado Railroad Museum. It was in rough shape and sat alongside the roundhouse for years while waiting for funds to get it restored. Once the funds came in and the restoration proceeded, the museum did an amazing job with the restoration. The GP30 looks absolutely pristine, like when it was delivered 62 years ago, in May 1962.

This shot shows the roundhouse and turntable at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden. The equipment the museum has collected over the years is absolutely fantastic! Something I find quite interesting is the empty three-rail track (a track that has both narrow gauge and standard gauge using three rails). Note that it turns to four rails for the turntable. Rio Grande tunnel Motor is one of the units in the collection.

The Forney Museum has done a great job of working on restoration of DRGW 3006. The graffiti has all been cleaned off, and the class lights and Mars lights have been restored. I really liked this perspective, looking up toward the number board and nose from the ground inside the Forney Museum.

Six years prior to this shot, DRGW 3006 was moved from Burnham to this location inside the Forney Transportation Museum. To the best of my knowledge, it is one of only two Rio Grande GP30s that have been preserved as Rio Grande units, both being in Colorado. In my very early days of rail photography back in 1997, I actually got a very similar shot (in terms of perspective) of DRGW 3006 when it was working in North Yard!

With a mid-day lull in action, I decided to stop by the Forney Museum of Transportation in Denver. This is the forever home of Rio Grande GP30 #3006! This unit sat at Burnham for over a decade, waiting for find out what would happen to it. Fortunately, it has a great home, protected from the conditions of the outside world.
