Moffat Tunnel (UP) Winter Park Express
AMTK 174 offers up some really great color as part of Amtrak's Winter Park Express Ski Train. The unit came to Denver a week earlier and was used on a special move on BNSF's Front Range Sub from Denver to Longmont (and back) the previous day. Indeed, all of the equipment in the shot was used on the special train. This morning, however, it is back to Winter Park!

AMTK 174, the only Phase 7 P42DC (as of the time of this picture) leads Amtrak's Winter Park Express west at Leyden. Snow is lightly falling and the train is kicking up some snow of its own as it charges west at track speed.

The westbound Winter Park Express rolls by the location of what used to be Mesa Oil. You can see the rusted out tanks behind the train. Mesa Oil needed to be served by a local twice a week. After UP decided to reduce the West Local down to one day a week, despite Mesa Oil stating they needed it twice, Mesa Oil moved to a new location in Denver. The old industry is now abandoned, and an RV storage facility has taken over much of the land.

UP's MGJNY has cleared the west switch of Eisele (Clay) and the Winter Park Express has an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) signal as it departs west. You can see the manifest wrapping around Big Ten Curve in the distance, the tail end still within the block on the main at Eisele (Clay).

It looks like UP may have pulled a bunch of center beam flats out of storage, possibly from somewhere in the desert between Grand Junction and Helper. This is a long strand of them on the Grand Junction to Denver manifest. The Winter Park Express is waiting for them to clear, sitting in the siding at Eisele (Clay).

AMTK 171 is leading the Winter Park Express Ski Train this morning. Note the orange covering on the coupler of 171. It is there to prevent snow from building up on the coupler, preventing it from being used. Once reaching Fraser, the power will run around the train.

The sun has only been up for about 20 minutes as the Winter Park Express Ski Train rolls west on the siding at Eisele (Clay). A 6,000-foot manifest is holding on the main track, getting ready to continue east on a clear (green) signal at the east end.

UP's MGJNY has slowed to a stop on the main track at Eisele (Clay). The Winter Park Express is climbing out of Rocky and will wrap around Big Ten, entering the siding at Eisele (Clay) to meet the manifest. The manifest has 101 cars and will not fit between switches, so the Winter Park Express will briefly have to stop to wait for it to clear the west switch.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Winter Park Express
The morning Winter Park Express, running about 15 minutes late (and seen here around 22 minutes after sunrise), heads west. The train just passed the high/wide detector at MP 8.4. The detector specifically checks to see if anything is sticking off the side or if there is a car that is too high to fit through the tunnels in the tunnel district. If something is sticking out, it'll break the wire on the detector and inform the dispatcher (and the train, via radio). No problems this morning though!
