Two units lead an eastbound manifest out of North Platte toward the triple track on the Kearney Sub on Main 3. This is a massive manifest that has both a mid-train DPU and a tail end DPU. This is the final picture I took on this little jaunt to Nebraska for the Big Boy. From here, I flew back to Colorado for some continued action on the Moffat Tunnel Sub.

While in Nebraska to catch the Big Boy, I happened upon a nice surprise when I found this KCS Retro Belle ES44AC. With the CP/KCS merger complete, creating CPKC, the Retro Belle scheme will soon be yet another in the history books.

Approaching the last crossover before entering the east end of Bailey Yard, a westbound manifest on Main 1 is slowing at an Approach (yellow) signal at West Keith. It looks like the train is all covered hoppers, but that is actually just the first half (or so) of the train.

For better or for worse, UP 4014 was headed east on Main 3 here at Buttermilk Curve. I saw that because the lighting certain favored Main 1 if you wanted to capture the entire curve. Still, with the green trees in the area, this shot on Main 3 is not terrible. UP has actually gotten rid of a lot of passenger equipment recently, which is why the train is hauling a lot of UP freight rolling stock.

Just east of Brady, NE, along US-30, UP's Heartland of America Tour, featuring UP 4014, is eastbound on Main 3 as a westbound manifest heads west toward Bailey Yard in North Platte, NE on Main 1.

A westbound manifest makes its way through the start of Buttermilk Curve east of North Platte. The train is on Main 1 and will actually be meeting UP's Big Boy (UP 4014) just a few miles ahead.

Many people think of Nebraska as flat and not particularly scenic. While that is no doubt true in parts of the state, you can find some pretty scenic areas and nice curves. One curve in particular that is always worth a visit is Buttermilk Curve, just east of Brady, NE. This is 25 miles (give or take) east of North Platte along the triple track main. Here, a single DPU brings up the end of a westbound coal empty headed for the Powder River Basin.

UP 4014, UP 4015, and a handful of passenger cars are headed east on Main 3 at the east end of the largest yard in North American, Bailey Yard in North Platte, NE. The Big Boy is continuing its Heartland of American Tour for 2024. Ahead at CP B283, the train will pick up a string of UP freight cars for the continued trip east.

Not too far east of North Platte, US 30 crosses over from the north side of the triple track mainline to the south side. This presents an excellent vantage point for rail traffic. In this shot, a westbound unit auto train is approaching on main one, led by two SD9043MACs.

One of the more popular spots along the triple track main is "Buttermilk Curve". This is one of the few spots in Nebraska with a readily available S-curve! Note the second unit (UP 9082) is a patched Chicago North Western C40-8.

A westbound manifest, led by UP 2021, is having engine troubles on main one and is thus running well under the maximum speed limit. In order to get faster intermodal traffic around the manifest, Dispatch is using main two. An intermodal (TOFC) led by UP SD70M 5116 is about to overtake the manifest. Note the headlight of yet another westbound on the horizon!
