Just east of the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Road, the Rocky Mountaineer slowly makes its way west. Even though the train is over an hour later than normal, it is still rolling slowly west, giving its passengers the opportunity to enjoy the Colorado scenery outside the train.

A single ES44AC brings up the tail end of this eastbound BNSF coal empty, leaving the siding at Leyden and continuing east toward BNSF's 31st Street Yard.

While it is rather uncommon to find coal train on the Moffat these days, it is even less common to find an eastbound empty coal train...but that's exactly what we have here. After meeting the Zephyr, this eastbound BNSF coal empty is pulling back out onto the main at East Leyden.

After meeting the westbound Zephyr here at Leyden, the dispatcher got the switch thrown and an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) set up for this BNSF coal train very quickly. Here, the eastbound is approaching said signal, ready to roll back out on to the main track.

The westbound Zephyr meets an eastbound BNSF coal empty at Leyden. It seems somewhat ironic that Union Pacific owns the tracks here (and handles the dispatching), yet neither train pictures is UP.

Highball Leyden! the standard pair of P42DCs lead a baggage car and seven Superliners west through the east switch of Leyden as the way west. The Zephyr lost nearly three hours between Omaha and Lincoln last night, so it is doing its best to make up some time.

A three hour late Zephyr is doing its best to make up time as it approaches a clear (green) signal at the east end of Leyden, crossing over 80th Avenue.

An eastbound BNSF coal train sits in the siding at Leyden, awaiting the westbound Zephyr to show up. This coal train is rather unusual though in that it is empty! When coal trains do (and did) run on the Moffat, typically eastbounds are loaded, after loading at a mine in the Rockies. BNSF has a contract with a customer that wants Powder River Basin coal, so the train is headed east empty.

Despite being halfway through June, the front range of the Rockies is still extremely lush and green, as seen here with the westbound Zephyr (plus two private cars) wrapping around the curve west of Eisele (Clay) and toward the grade crossing at Blue Mountain.

This going away shot of the westbound Zephyr offers a bit of a look at modern and traditional rail travel in the United States. The Zephyr itself has the Superliners that have been a standard staple for nearly 50 years. The two private cars on the tail end represent an era long gone, when the railroads hauled beautiful dome cars on their lines.

I certainly wish I could join the passengers riding aboard the Evelyn A. Henry and the Warren R. Henry on the tail end of the westbound Zephyr this morning! The two cars, in their matching paint schemes, look very good on the back of the train.

This spring has been a really time for private passengers cars hitching a ride on the tail end of the Zephyr. Amtrak has increased the price to haul passenger cars and reduced the number of locations they are still to pick up/drop off. Consequently, there was quite a stretch of minimal private car traffic on the Zephyr. It seems that may be over though! Two Patrick Henry private cars are seen here at Eisele (Clay) on the westbound Zephyr.
