AMTK 159 and AMTK 154 have the duty of leading the westbound Zephyr this morning. The train is right on time as it rolls west on the main through a still-snowy plain. After a lot of snow last week, the forecast is much nicer this week, with highs around 55°F (13°C).

A single C44AC-CTE brings up the tail end of UP's MGJNY as it rolls along Oberon Road in Arvada. The train is only going about 15 MPH and is actually slowing as the train has a red signal at CP DS007 (Arvada). The train won't quite come to a stop as it'll get a light at Arvada before it gets there.

A bit of snow is stuck to the plow of this C44ACM, leading the MGJNY east through Arvada. These three GEs departed with the train the night before from Grand Junction for the trip east to North Yard. For the last few years, this has been the only UP manifest that runs on the Moffat.

An eastbound UP MGJNY has just crossed Kipling Street in Arvada, and is continuing east on the final seven miles or so in to North Yard. Snow has been falling all day and continues now, but the relatively warm temperatures (34°F / 1°C) are keeping the snow from accumulating too much on the ground.

Three GEs are on the point of this eastbound BNSF coal empty. Yes, this is indeed a coal empty running east on the Moffat. The train unloaded coal at the power plant in Valmy, NV. The train runs over the Moffat as BNSF has no trackage rights on UP's Overland Route. It will proceed to the Powder River Basin in Wyoming, load up, and head back to Valmy, running west (loaded) over the Moffat.

An eastbound BNSF coal empty arrived at Rocky about two hours ago, and has tied down in the siding. The train is waiting for a fresh crew to come out of Denver to take it the rest of the way in. A substantial snow storm, the third since Monday, has moved in and has started to dump was is expected to be 8 to 10 inches of snow in the next 24 hours!

As you can see, fresh snow is currently falling as the westbound Zephyr charges west on the main track at Rocky. The train is running right on time and, hopefully, the weather will not adversely affect the Zephyr.

The start of the third snow storm of the week has hit at East Rocky, and this one is expected to drop anywhere from 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) between now and early tomorrow afternoon. The westbound Zephyr knocked down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky.

Just east of Leyden, a trio of GEs leads a relatively short Provo-Denver manifest eastbound toward Denver. The manifest is right around 4,000 feet long. Most BNSF manifest are, on average, right around a mile long. The scene is a cool mix of fall and winter mixed together as many trees and shrubs still retain their red and yellow leaves. It has been a few years since this much snow has fallen in early November.

DOTX 220, catching a ride on the back of the westbound Zephyr, is a Federal Railroad Administration track inspection car. The FRA has both manned and unmanned cars at its disposal, and this 1954-built Pullman car is an example of a manned car.

The Zephyr has a Federal Railroad Administration car in tow on the journey west this morning. The car is DOTX 221, originally built by the Pullman Standard in 1954. A fellow railfan also setup for a shot, and is standing alongside the rails.

Days like today are some of my favorite to get out and get a few shots when trains are playing in the snow! Fortunately, it is not extremely cold at the moment. Only 31°F (-1°C), so travel is not too difficult. The snow, however, is coming down hard as the westbound Zephyr approaches just west of Leyden.

A major snow storm moved into the Denver Metro area yesterday and is continuing this morning, with plenty of additional snow falling. The westbound Zephyr is taking on the storm as it charges west on the main just west of Leyden.
