UP 4014 and train cross over a fairly long, albeit not particularly high, bridge over Kiowa Creek. Being that it is September, the creek is probably little more than a stream, probably only a few feet across (if that). However, the train still looks great as it crosses the trestle amongst the trees!

As this eastbound coal train slowly makes its way further out onto the plains, the Rocky Mountains slowly slip away over the horizon. However, at this spot just west of Bennett, the peaks still protrude over the top of the horizon. This coal train is running 2x1 - 2 units on the point and 1 DPU on the tail end. This is the typical configuration for all eastbound coal loads on the Limon Sub.

Prior to the construction of I-70, CO-36 was the main route east of Denver out on to the plains. A westbound oil train moves up and down with the plains landscape parallel to US-36 a few miles west of Bennett, CO.

I like getting an "up close" long lens shot like this one. The compression of the train and detail of the lead units makes for a dramatic shot. The Limon Sub moves up and down over the gentle hills of the eastern Colorado plains.

As the Limon Sub heads out on to the plains, opportunities for long lens shots like this become far more prevalent! Snow-capped Rocky Mountains are visible in the distance as a coal train, running 2x(0)x1 approaches a slow order west of Bennett, CO.

This shot pretty well says "welcome to the plains", don't you think? It is the first day of Spring and crops are starting to turn green! This coal train is between Watkins and Strasburg.

Ahh, the plains of eastern Colorado! The majority of the coal trains that come down from the Moffat head east on the Limon Sub for points in Missouri, Illinois and beyond. Most trains, such as this one, have their power setup in a 2x1 configuration.

Just west of Bennett, a unit UP pipe train is led by a good looking BNSF SD75I Warbonnet. A bit of pink is still holding on to the north as this shot was taken during the same minute as the sunset. The train is moving along US-36 near track speed, around 45 MPH.

Near Bennett, the track come through a long S-Curve and cross over a substantial trestle. Unfortunately, access to the trestle is limited. However, with a little bit of hiking along some ATV roads, you can find your way to this long-lens shot, great for westbounds coming across the bridge.
