This shot really demonstrates the diverging of alignments from the original Denver and Salt Lake and the Dotsero Cutoff. The original mainline that David Moffat used in an attempt to reach Salt Lake City has the Phippsburg Local sitting on it in the foreground. The Dotsero Cutoff, built about 30 years later, is in the distance with the coal empty. David Moffat's original mainline never made it west of Craig, CO, and the line is now the most underused stretch of CTC mainline in the country. This Phippsburg Local is about the only train that runs on the branch, only making a few trips each week.

As the Phippsburg Local puts its train together at Bond, a westbound coal empty passes by on the main. Bond is a crew change point for UP trains, so this Denver-based crew is reaching its destination. A van is waiting around the corner in the yard at Bond to pick up the crew and take them to the hotel in Yampa. The same van also has the Grand Junction-based relief crew. The crews will swap out and the coal empty will continue west.

Bond is a major control point on the Moffat. It marks the start of the Dotsero Cutoff that connects David Moffat's original mainline to the Denver and Rio Grande mainline. In this shot, the Phippsburg Local is backing to the second half of its train (in a yard track), putting the 38-car train together. Once it is put together, the local will depart west up the Craig Branch.

UP 8230 and UP 5871 are in the OS at Bond, sometimes referred to as Orestod. Here, there are crossovers between the main and the east and west sidings at Bond, as well as Craig Branch. The name Orestod comes from Dotsero spelled backward. It is here that the Dotsero cutoff was built in the 1930, connecting the original Denver and Rio Grande Western (at Dotsero) with the Denver and Salt Lake (here at Bond, or Orestod).

Right at the transition from the Glenwood Springs Sub to the Moffat Tunnel Sub, an eastbound oil train creeps along on the siding at Bond. A fresh crew just got on the train and is preparing to depart eastbound. Note the rails breaking away and climbing a grade above the oil train. This is the Craig Branch that heads to Steamboat Springs and ultimately Craig. Once busy with coal traffic, the line between Bond and Phippsburg now sees about two trains per week on average. Locals from Phippsburg down to Bond and back.

UP 5105 has the eastbound Rocky Mountaineer rolling east on the siding through Bond. Most UP trains would change crews at Bond, but that was not the case with the Mountaineer. Crews from the Canadian-based tourist railroad have made the trip to Colorado and have qualified for running on the former Rio Grande. A single crew will operate between Denver and Glenwood Springs (and vice versa). Here, the train is on the siding as it will be meeting the westbound Zephyr.

Here at Bond, also known as Orestod, the Zephyr creeps west through a 15 MPH slow order. The slow order is due to the extreme heat and the concern of sun kinks is the rails. The Craig Branch, leading to Energy and Axial mines, peals away from the main line here. The Zephyr changes from the Moffat Tunnel Sub to the Glenwood Springs Sub here as it starts on the Dotsero Cutoff.

This westbound manager's special is rolling down the main at Bond (sometimes referred to as "Center Bond"). It is here than the Craig Branch (original grade of the Denver and Salt Lake) departs to the right and starts climbing toward Steamboat Springs. This control point also separates the East Siding from the West Siding at Bond. This is just about the end of the journey for the crew on the point of the manager's special. They will stop the train in Bond for a crew change. The next crew will take the train to Grand Junction.
