A 15-car manager's special glides down the main at East Bond. Notice that part of the investment in the Moffat that UP has made in recent years is to replace the wood ties on both the main and the siding with concrete ties. Concrete ties hold up better under heavier trains and typically last longer and need less maintenance than their wooden counterparts.

This MP15AC started life wearing scarlet and gray. Southern Pacific was one of several railroads to buy the MP15AC for switching. The MP15AC largely replaced the older MP15DC. Do not let the name mislead you...both models had DC traction motors (as AC traction motor technology was not really developed until the 1990s). The MP15AC, however, used an AC alternator to generate electricity that was then converted to DC for the traction motors.

Sometime around 2004, UP was really getting into remote controlled locomotives. This allows a person on the ground to control a locomotive using a remote control pack. Since locomotives had to be retrofitted with RCL equipment, UP got creative and took some old B30-7's, added the RCL equipment, and removed virtually everything else. This allowed these units to be hooked up to any power in the yard and control them remotely for switching.

This Control Cab Remote Control Locomotive (CCRCL) has received quite a bit of tagging! It is on its way to Grand Junction...whether or use or for storage remains to be seen. In order to easily distinguish these remote control units (which have no prime mover and cannot move under their own power), UP painted them gray.

How's this for an interesting looking beast? This is the shell of a B30-7 that is now a "Control Cab Remote Control Locomotive" or CCRCL. Basically, Union Pacific removed the prime mover and the fuel tank (note that the exhaust stack is capped). They also removed the control stand and blacked out most the windows on the cab. They also installed remote control electronics to the units. The unit can still be MU'd to other units, allowing this unit to act as a "bridge". This unit can be hooked up to a powered unit and the person on the ground can then remotely control anything.

This MP15AC (also designated as an MP15N after being rebuilt by UP) is on its way to Grand Junction. Not sure if it going to actually be used for switching, or if it simply going there for storage. There are lots of older units currently being stored on the west side of Grand Junction.

The westbound MNYRO has some extra equipment behind the head end power. This includes two switch engines and three CCRCL's. That is an acronym for "Control Car Remote Control Locomotive". They are essentially a bridge for running units in remote control mode.

That is the right way to take a train ride through the Colorado Rockies! Sitting on an open vestibule on the back of the California Zephyr. The train has clear signals to continue west toward Grand Junction along the high waters of the Colorado River.

The westbound Zephyr runs down the main track at Bond along the Colorado River. The westbound MNYRO, with a fresh crew that just got on in Bond, is pulling as well on the siding. It will stop at the west end of Bond and wait for the eastbound Zephyr (which the westbound Zephyr will meet at Dell) before proceeding west.

Bond, CO is a crew change point for Union Pacific (as it was for both Southern Pacific and Rio Grande too). Both eastbound and westbound trains (not running on the Craig Branch) stop in Bond. Westbound trains leave Denver with a Denver-based crew. Upon arriving in Bond, that crew goes to a hotel and a Grand Junction-based crew comes from the hotel. That crew gets on the train and takes it (to their home) in Grand Junction. There was an MNYRO in Bond that was swapping crews as I came through. The new crew started pulling toward the west end of Bond just as the westbound Zephyr came by on the main. In this shot, both trains are moving the same direction, the Zephyr on the main (with a clear signal ahead) and the MNYRO on the siding (with a red signal ahead).

At the crossover at Center Bond, this eastbound coal load crosses over from the main to the east siding at Bond. Here, the crew will tie the train down and get a ride to Yampa. The crew on this train is based out of Grand Junction. A Denver-based crew will take the train to Denver.

At the crossover at Center Bond, a westbound coal train continues down the mainline. You can see the clear indication on the left-hand signal. This is the spot where the Craig Branch breaks away and the Dotsero Cutoff begins. It is also a crew change point. The westbound streaking by here will stop at Bond and be relieved.

Anybody need a light? In this five minute exposure taken around 11:00pm, and eastbound manifest streaks east past the intermediate on the approach to Yarmony. All the trees and bushes were lit up by the headlight of the train. Note the signal dropping from green to red and the FRED flashing on the back of the train.

It is 7:15pm as this westbound coal empty winds its way west past the crossovers at Center Bond. In the foreground from left to right are the main track, siding, and two yard tracks. In the distance, you can see the Craig Branch diverging from the Main Track and quickly gaining some altitude.
