Two mainlines converge (or diverge, depending on your point of view) at this location. This coal load is coming from Grand Junction and is headed toward the Dotsero Cutoff and the Moffat Mainline. To the left is of course Tennessee Pass, now defunct for nearly ten years.

Just east of Dotsero on the Dotsero Cutoff, track and time has been given out to Maintenance of Way so they can work their magic to keep things running smoothly. This high railing piece of equipment is setting on the track with track and time between Range and Dotsero.

This track and time granted, this Maintenance of Way equipment has just passed underneath I-70 and is headed toward the siding of Range for some routine maintenance.

For over five years, the siding of Yarmony was Out Of Service on the Moffat Mainline. In November 2000, an accident took the siding out and it wasn't until March 14, 2006 that UP finally got the siding reopened. Now, the siding was lengthened by nearly 3000 feet at the same time, but it still took a very long time. This coal empty is actually tied down in the siding at Yarmony, waiting for a crew to arrive from Grand Junction.

On the Dotsero Cutoff between Bond and Dell, Amtrak 5 is quickly headed west at the maximum authorized speed. There has been several hours of maintenance out of the cutoff, but Amtrak will force some trains to start moving in the afternoon, making for some good chasing after the morning lull.

A UP coal empty with eight units (only of which three are actually active and working) makes it way west out of Little Gore Canyon west of Azure. The train will wrap around the mountain in the foreground and head through the siding of Radium about two miles ahead of the train.

This coal empty, which is shuttling power to Grand Junction to be used in DPU's for eastbound coal loads, is on the approach to Radium. The Colorado River runs on the right side of the image, and Gore Canyon is actually visible just off of center to the right in the distance.

Union Pacific still keeps a Rio Grande Jordan Spreader (AX-45) on-hand up in Phippsburg...just in case! I'm not sure how long the spreader has sat in P-Burg tied down, but I suspect it has been awhile since it saw any action.

A very late Amtrak 6 passes by the location of what's left of the State Bridge Lodge. The lodge was established in 1890 and, regretablly, it burned to the ground just four days before this picture was taken.

It is 7:15pm as this westbound coal empty winds its way west past the crossovers at Center Bond. In the foreground from left to right are the main track, siding, and two yard tracks. In the distance, you can see the Craig Branch diverging from the Main Track and quickly gaining some altitude.

Anybody need a light? In this five minute exposure taken around 11:00pm, and eastbound manifest streaks east past the intermediate on the approach to Yarmony. All the trees and bushes were lit up by the headlight of the train. Note the signal dropping from green to red and the FRED flashing on the back of the train.
