This BNSF coal load went through the Moffat Tunnel about eight hours before this picture was taken! The train was loaded by Utah Railway at the Wildcat Mine in Utah. Here, the train is on main two headed south, about to pass underneath the 6th Avenue bridge. Invesco Field at Mile High - home of the Denver Broncos - is visible in the distance (above the lead unit).

I was waiting here at 20th Street for a loaded BNSF coal train to come down from Prospect Junction (the track on the far left). The train loaded the day before on the Utah Railway near Helper, UT. Unfortunately, a different BNSF coal load (from the Powder River Basin) came along to tie down on the Lodo siding, so I had to settle for this shot!

Two BNSF SD40-2 pull a pair of DMUs (Diesel Multiple Unit) out of Union Station. The train is coming out of the station using the passenger lead, the same track Amtrak uses in the evenings. The DMUs will be taken into the yard and added to a train for shipment to Portland, OR later in the day.

A sharp looking pair of SD60Ms sit waiting for their next assignment near the House in Denver. These were some of the last units delivered to Burlington Northern in the Cascade Green scheme. For nearly 18 years, they kept their numbers in the 9200's. Recently they were moved to the 8100's to make room for new units on BNSF's roster.

After helping setup a UP passenger train (headed for Saint Paul for the Republican National Convention), UP 1989 is set out as it won't be joining the rest of the equipment for the trip. More than likely, within a few days, UP 1989 will be back in night service on the Joint Line!

In the quickly fading sun, UP 844 slowly pulls out of Union Station in front of the Denver skyline. The train is preparing to pull passenger equipment out of Denver (which was present for the Democratic National Convention) to go to Saint Paul for the Republican National Convention. UP 844, however, would only be going as far as Cheyenne.

When old versus new or perhaps the other way around! EMD's newest model, an SD70ACe, on the right sits alongside a 64-year-old Alco 4-8-4. UP 1989 is backing into Union Station to pick up cars for a passenger train.

As UP 844 is crossing over from Track Two to Track One at Union Station, it is blowing off some steam from its pistons. After being on display all week for the Democratic National Convention, it is time for the mighty steam engine to return to Cheyenne.

UP has pulled out half of the special that will be headed for Saint Paul for the Republican National Convention. The train will pause here while UP 844 comes out of the station. Then, the train will back up to the station and pick up the other half of the train.
