Yard Shots Amtrak
This is the engine that was beat out by General Electric's P42DC to replace the F40PH. Amtrak received several of these units for use (as the name implies) in California. It is a rare find to find one of these outside that west coast state.

A rare shot of the back end of an F59PH! This unit came up the Joint Line earlier in the day. It is currently being placed at the House while waiting to depart.

A site that you don't exactly see on a daily basis! BNSF's HKCKDEN (Kansas City - Denver) picked up an Amtrak California F59PH from the testing center outside Pueblo. This F59 came east from California on the Zephyr last September.

Cresting the hill! The east switch of Mesa is a fantastic place to get some telephoto shots of eastbounds. The snow-capped Rocky Mountains make a wonderful background as the power works hard to pull the train over the grade.

An eastbound coal load is approaching UP Junction at the end of the Belt Line. The train has a lunar signal and will continue at restricted speed toward the Limon Sub.

A westbound coal load is led by an SD70MAC and an ES44AC. The train has an approach signal as it approaches the yard. A broken switch in the yard is fouling things up a bit!

Talk about a nice sampling of paint schemes! A C44-9W wears the original Heritage scheme while a second C44-9W sports the Heritage II scheme. Then, on the tail end, an ES44DC has the New Image scheme.

Now here are some good old fashioned EMD work-horses! A GP15-1 and a GP38-2 work to switch cars for the MDVGR (Denver, CO to Green River, WY) which would depart later in the day. These units are particularly good in yard service as they are not equipped with dynamic brakes. This makes them less useful as road power over much of UP's system.

A "triclops" SD60M idles away in the yard at 36th Street. This power was brand new in the 1980's ... these days, you can still find this power on the mainline. In fact, this particular unit went east of the Limon Sub to Salina, KS later in the day. Oh, and that fantastic looking SD40-2 is looking pretty dang good too!

UP has been leasing seven units from BNSF for over a week now (BNSF is repaying some horsepower-miles). UP has kept all seven units together on the Moffat working on coal trains. Here, the units are set up in a 5x2 configuration on a coal empty waiting to leave the yard later in the afternoon.

A train headed for the Joint Line is coming out of the yard in Denver with a pretty descent-looking Warbonnet on the point! That Warbonnet is letting loose on a bit of exhaust!

It has been nearly three years since UP 1989 was unveiled in Denver! And in all that time, it has probably spent more than 90% of its time running between Denver and Pueblo overnight on the Joint Line. Happened to catch it hanging around the yard during the day, awaiting its night run to Pueblo ten hours later.

UP's only daily manifest on the Moffat Tunnel Sub (at this point in time) runs between North Yard (in Denver) and Roper (in Salt Lake). The eastbound version - the MRONY - has nearly completed its journey as it pulls down the North Yard Siding.

With the economy being in a slump right now, railroads are storing unneeded power. The stored power tends to be older power (SD40-2s, for example). As a result, newer power is showing up on jobs that would have operated under older power not long ago. Here is a perfect example. The "Beer Run" sits on the Golden Sub at Tennyson Street with a pair of C44-9Ws for power.
