The current power for the Rocky and South Locals sits idling in North Yard near the Yard Office. UP 1901 (ex-DRGW 3155) has been on the local along with a former Cotton Belt GP40-2 and a former Southern Pacific GP60 for the last week.

Denver Union Terminal (RTD) Ski Train
Home at last! Eleven hours and 132 miles after departing Union Station this morning, the Ski Train has completed yet another round trip to Winter Park. The train is pulling in, "head first", to Union Station on Track 2 to allow its passengers to disembark.

The eastbound Ski Train passes over the top of the Apex just south of North Yard on the main track. The train just passed a yellow signal as it approaches Prospect Junction. At Prospect, the train will have a restricting (lunar) signal, and cross over the BNSF track to get into Union Station.

Looks like any other day with Amtrak stopped at Union Station, right? Guess again! For reasons unknown, Amtrak had this extra train set sitting on Track 3 at Union Station for nearly a week. The train is a complete California Zephyr, but it seemed to be kept in Denver as a backup!

A roster shot of UP 1989 in some nice afternoon light as it leads the MPUNY-25 north through South Denver. The elevated platform behind 1989 carries the Regional Transportation District's (RTD's) Light Rail line south to Littleton.

Running rather late, the northbound MPUNY-25 is moving north on Main 2 past Evans Avenue. The train left Pueblo (about 110 miles south) the night before and barely made it past Colorado Springs before the crew died. The train was tied down on Monument siding until today when a new crew took the train north into Denver.

It is one of a kind! BNSF's so-called "Vomit Bonnet" was a test paint scheme applied only to BNSF 9647 shortly after the merger. This was a test paint scheme that mixed the colors from BN's "green and cream" scheme along with the pattern of Santa Fe's Warbonnet scheme. Rather amazing that, ten years ago, the unit is still roaming the rails!

This southbound coal load on Main One crosses over Iowa Avenue just south of Denver along Santa Fe Drive (US-85). The train has just entered the triple track main that will take the train down to Littleton where it will enter track warrant territory for the trip to points south.

Another weekend run completed, the Ski Train idles quietly on Track Two and Union Station. Track One sits empty while waiting for a late-running Number Six to show up. On the left side of the picture, AMTK 518 (a 8-32BWH) waits for the Zephyr to arrive so it can be added to the consist and taken back east to Chicago.

Once referred to as "Pepsi Cans" when they had their version of the Phase III paint scheme (and now referred to as "Diet Pepsi Cans" with the Phase IV scheme), Amtrak's 8-32BWH's used to be seen in the mid-west more frequently then today. Now, you typically only see one when it is in transit between the east and California. On this night, AMTK 518 was in town along with AMTK 658, an HHP-8 electric unit that was on its way back east from Pueblo, CO. Both units would be added to the eastbound California Zephyr.

AMTK 658 is an 8000 H.P. HHP-8 found on the Northeast Corridor. These are the units that can get trains up to 120+ MPH out there between Washington DC and Philadelphia. The unit went down to Pueblo to the Transportation Technology Center for testing. On this evening, the unit was waiting to be added to the eastbound California Zephyr to be taken back east.

Another blizzard on the eastern plains earlier in the week resulted in UP running a Jordan Spreader on the KP to clear the line. I'm not sure if UP 5590 was one of the units with the spreader, or if it came through during the blizzard and collected its snowy hat along the way.

What do these three units have in common? Well, aside from the obvious that is! Of course they are all geeps and they are all on the active UP roster. But can you figure out something a little less obvious that they have in common? You can post your guess by clicking here and leaving a comment. I'll post the answer in a few days if nobody gets it correct!

The day before this image was taken, BNSF ran an inspection special down the Front Range Sub into Denver. After making a station stop at Union Station, the train used the passenger lead and was tied down here, near the house at 38th street. The train is only two cars long, and led by a single SD40-2.
