Yard Shots BNSF
One of only a handful of "Baby Tunnel Motors" (GP15-1's) on BNSF's roster hangs out near the house in Denver. BN brought 25 GP15-1's over to the BNSF roster, although many of those have now been sold off to Locomotive Leasing Partners (LLPX). Prior to being BN, this unit was actually a Frisco GP15-1, delivered as SLSF 103 in August 1977.

This Provo to Denver manifest enters the North Yard Siding at C&S Junction and leaves the Main Track behind. The train will meet Amtrak 5 at Utah Junction before continuing south on the Main Track to Prospect Junction, where it will cross over to BNSF tracks and proceed into the yard.

Amtrak 5 is in the process of making its station stop at Union Station. The inbound crew, which brought the train in from Lincoln, NE is switching out with the outbound crew, which will take the train to Grand Junction, CO. The second unit is in the process of receiving fuel and passenger are disembarking/boarding on the opposite side of the train. Within the next few years, this shot may be impossible if the tracks here are buried as has been reported for the Union Station redevelopment project.

Running a few hours late, Amtrak 5 is backing into Denver Union Station, headed for Track 1 in the depot. Amtrak backs in behind the left field wall of Coors Field. In about six weeks, the Colorado Rockies will start a new season with high hopes!

Still in pretty decent shape, UP 1352 (ex-DRGW 3097) sits with class lights still installed near the yard office at 36th street. DRGW 3097 - the last Grande geep in the 30xx range - finished its Rio Grande life as the Colorado Springs switcher back in 2005.

Got Power? A string of 20 units ranging from newer power to classic power sits on run-around track in North Yard. Meanwhile, a remote control operator moves a set of switchers out of the way on the lead to make room for three units from the MNPNY to pull off the train on yard track four. The managers in the yard tower were trying to figure out what to do with all the power.

BNSF's westbound HDENPVO-03 is just starting on its 500+ mile trackage rights trip between Denver and Provo. There was a colorful consist on the train today, with BNSF 4880 (in H2) leading, followed by two Ferromex units. The first, FXE 4544, is an AC4400CW. The second, FXE 4643, is a new ES44AC.

Ferrocaril Mexicano (known as Ferromex) is one of the largest railroads in Mexico. The railroad was formed in 1998 after most railroads in the country were privatized. Recently, Ferromex ordered several new ES44AC's from General Electric. One such GEVO is seen here on a westbound Denver to Provo manifest.

One of my favorite units from the pre-BNSF era would have to be the SD60M's that BN ordered in 1992. Some units have the typical two-pane wind shield, while some have a three-pane wind shield. I personally prefer the two-pane as seen here!

BNSF Hostlers take an interesting (and very colorful) consist to "the house". The unit that appears to be UP is actually now owned by Helm Leasing and is numbered HLCX 5957. The unit an SD60 of Chicago North Western heritage. HLCX 5957 is ex-UP 5957, nee-CNW 8026. The unit painted in UP colors on May 9, 1997 and was retired by UP on January 4, 2002.

A rather unique Norfolk Southern C40-9W sits at the house at BNSF 38th street facility. The unit is wearing an Operation Lifesaver scheme. The text on the long hood beneath "Operation Lifesaver" reads "Saving Lives at America's Highway-Rail Crossings." The text in the circle to the right reads "25 Years, Operation Lifesaver". Red text printed on the white circle itself reads "You're Our Living Proof. 1972-1997." Only about ten such units received this special scheme.

A string of about two dozen units sits at UP's Burnham Shops in storage. Whether or not this is temporary storage or not remains to be seen. Most of these units have been here since early December 2006. The line consists of SD40-2s, SD50s, SD60s, C40-8s and some switchers. UP 9858 (ex-SP 5514, nee-DRGW 5514) is on the south end of the string of units. The tracks in the foreground are a part of RTD's Light Rail system in Denver.
