a northbound coal train makes its way across the diamond at 20th Street on Main 2. The train just received a fresh crew and is moving north through Yard Limits. About a half mile ahead, the train will re-enter CTC and accelerate north toward the Brush Sub.

About five months...that's how long this former Grande SD50 has been sitting right here in this exact spot! With so many new units showing up on the property, UP has stored several units indefinitely. UP 9858 (ex-SP 5514, nee-DRGW 5514) is one such example. It is being stored in Burnham near downtown Denver.

Ever wondered where they store the Ski Train during the off-season? The Ski Train has a couple of tracks reserved at Burnham just for them. The train is broken up over two or three tracks and the power is kept on yet another track. Here, the train will sit (and be worked on) until the summer runs start at the end of June.

A string of nine units awaits for BNSF's Brush Line dispatcher to a clear a route back toward North Yard. The nine units are on UP's Burnham Lead, and hostlers are taking the units back to North Yard (via the Joint Line and 20th Street) as they are ready to be placed into service.

With paint that is still in pretty good shape, UP 1344 sits on the bridge over 38th Street in UP's 36th Street Yard. The shot was taken from the Blake Street bridge, also running over 38th Street.

A couple of extra P42DC's hang out on Track Three at Union Station. Amtrak typically keeps one spare P42DC on hand at Union Station (as was the case on this day, off the picture to the left), but these two were just idling away.

Once a day, UP runs a transfer train between BNSF's 31st Street Yard and UP's 36th Street Yard. On this morning, UP 1344 and UP 1480 were in charge of moving the cars from 31st Street to 36th Street.

Passengers aboard Amtrak 5 enjoy the view (well, for what it is worth at this particular location!) from the Lounge car as the train heads west on Main 3 toward C&S Junction and the far-more-scenic Moffat Tunnel Sub.

The westbound California Zephyr with ATMK 79 on the point heads west on a clear signal at the Pecos Street Crossover. With Amtrak actually running just about on time, the sun was still rather low in the eastern sky!

In honor of Norfolk Southern's paint scheme, I thought this picture should be in black and white! Two NS units on an "earthworm" train - a unit covered hopper train - enters the LoDo siding for temporary storage. The train is passing one of the many building that has popped up in LoDo in the last few years.

Fortunately, you can still run across former Rio Grande units even in 2007. While DRGW 5371 is the only remaining Rio Grande unit left, there are many units that have only been patched that still roam the rails. Here, UP 1344 is on a transfer train headed to BNSF's 31st Street Yard from UP's 36th Street Yard.

A view of the back end of EMDX 70. This was one of the original prototype SD70ACe's created by EMD back in 2004. The unit was sitting shut down near BNSF's 38th Street facilities on this Saturday morning.

This unit has seen far better days! In fact, this unit was up at East Portal (of the Moffat Tunnel) almost exactly three years ago on April 25, 2004. Here is a shot of the unit on that day. This SD70ACe, now listed an EMDX 70 was originally GM 70, one of the first SD70ACe prototypes. Note that the unit has undergone some serious modifications in the last three years...and the paint has not exactly been maintained!

This is the first ex-BN GP50 that I've seen equipped as a Remote Control Unit. The unit was sitting near the house at BNSF's 38th Street facilities.
