BNSF, Montana Rail Link
|
This particular Montana Rail Link SD45 has had quite a few owners over the course of its 35 year history! Built in October 1971, it was delivered as Seaboard Coast Line 2041. Since then, it has been merged or sold to Seaboard System Lines 8941, CSX 8941, VMV 8941, MRL 8941 and IMRL 8941 before finally returning to MRL! At the time of this photos, it was also the highest numbered unit on MRL's roster.

I don't typically post photos of rail cars, but I thought this car was a reasonable exception! Built over thirty years ago, this former Rock Island boxcar clearly shows its heritage beneath its rusty exterior! The boxcar is now owned by the shortline Kyle Railroad in eastern Colorado / western Kansas. Its original Rock Island number was 300778.

Two units lead the eastbound MDVSI-26 on the Limon Subdivision. The train is moving at restricted speed as its track warrant is joint with another train. The Roydale Local (LDJ03) is working further east near Havana street and it too is occupying the main track. UP 3932 and crew must be prepared to stop in one-half the distance of vision of the track ahead.

One of the Roydale Locals (the LDJ03) had a huge train that it was working on switching near Havana Street on the Limon Sub. Half the local (probably 40 cars) were sitting on the main track blocking through traffic while another 30 or so cars were being switched in industries. The lead unit, UP 1526, was SSW 7291 until August 5, 2005. I found that I actually have a shot of SSW 7291 taken on August 1, 2003 in Delta, CO on the Montrose Local!!

BNSF 5497 and BNSF 5165 south lead an empty unit Sulphur Train (GBNVGAT) through the Restricted Limits Clear Creek just north of Utah Junction. The red castle in the background was home to Westminster University starting in 1908 (it was striving to be the "Princeton of the West"). However, World War I shut the school down a mere nine years later in 1917. The city of Harris, CO changed its name to Westminster in honor of the university. Today, the castle is home to a private Christian school (K-12).

EMD Leasing

The paint scheme applied to the "Oakway" leasing SD60's, which came out fresh in the mid-1980's, is one of my favorite schemes. I've always been a fan of blue, so I particularly like these units. Twenty years later, their paint is still holding up pretty well for the most part! EMD 9082 is leading a northbound Military Train on the Front Range Sub the day after Thanksgiving.
