At that time, the bridge carried one lane of traffic each direction. In 2018, the bridge was doubled in width, and there are now two lanes in each direction on the bridge. Just over 30 years ago, this would have been on the north edge of the field of Stapleton International Airport. Go further back in time, this was once the location of Sandown Junction, where the Rock Island left the KP to the right (where the covered hopper sits) over to the Belt Line and the connection to the Rio Grande at North Yard. That connection has since been severed, however. Now, the area has been completely redeveloped for both commercial and residential purposes. Most recently, the RTD A-Line (commuter rail) to DIA was built. RTD was able to use UP's Limon Sub corridor for the alignment. They will pull west on Main 1 to clear the signal at C&S, then get a light to cross over to Main 2 and the North Yard siding to head back east. In the distance, you can just see the tail end of the westbound Zephyr on Main 2. One additional note of interest...UP 6345 was original SP 296! After getting the unit added, waiting for the Zephyr, and performing an air test, the oil train will be ready to head west. In the distance, you can see the tail end of an eastbound oil load that arrived a few hours earlier. That power will be removed from the train before it departs east for the KP. The unit will be added to the point of a westbound empty oil train. A few years ago, UP laid off all of the engine hostlers in Denver. These hostlers would make sure power changes like this were done before the road crew showed up. Before unit trains (mostly oil trains these days, coal trains in the past) head west on the Moffat, UP frequently will do a little power shuffling. Often times adding a unit to a train that came off the relatively flat plains before it heads into the Rockies. Such is the case here as this SD70ACe is waiting for authority from DS-378 to back east onto the point of a westbound oil train, just barely visible way off in the distance. This shot also demonstrates how long the OS at C&S Junction is. It must be one of the longest anywhere, as it is roughly 1/2 a mile between switches! Unlike UP, which has moved all but the most minor of maintenance out of Denver, BNSF still does some more substantial maintenance on engines here in Denver. A pair of BN (yes...patched BNSF...but still Cascade Green) switching together on a yard job at 31st Street. Note the second unit might, at first glance, appear to be a GP30. And, it did indeed start life as exactly that. However, BNSF no longer has any "true" GP30s left on the roster. They have all been rebuilt and this unit is now designated as a GP39-3. BNSF took control of MRL at the start of 2024. Since then, the MRL power has been scattered across the BNSF system, being assigned to trains like any other BNSF unit. The birds are all lined up to watch the rail action as a remote control UP yard job is switching cars out the south end of the yard, underneath the 48th Avenue overpass. The units are being controlled by a UP employee that is also throwing switches back in the yard. This remote control zone is called "Zone 1" here at North Yard. Thirty years ago, it would have been largely filled with scarlet and gray Espee power. Now, as it has been for the last few decades, it is a sea of UP yellow.
