In the late 90s, Union Pacific really wanted units with more horsepower. EMD and GE both obliged with their own attempts at a 6000 HP unit. GEs was designed an AC6000CW. UP 6894 was delivered to UP as UP 7006, one of the original GE AC6000CW. The 6000 HP units were plagued with issues, and the attempts were eventually ditched. Today, UP 6894 has been rebuilt (internally) with a 4400 HP prime mover and is designated as a C44ACM.

Sitting on the ready tracks at North Yard, UP 1943 looks pretty great in the morning light. The unit has spent a lot of time leading oil trains between Wash, UT and destination to the east. However, rumor has it that its 92-day inspection is due. Since that can no longer be conducted in Denver, the unit will likely go to North Platte, NE on the MNYNP. From there? Who can say...

A BNSF yard job is waiting on a string of covered hoppers for BNSF's Laurel to Denver manifest (that just came off the Front Range Sub) to clear so it can continue switching. The train is pulling in to Track 46. In the distance, Sunday morning traffic hustles along on I-25. Further in the distance, you can see the interchange between I-25 and I-70, referred to by locals as "The Mouse Trap".

Here is a wide variety of classic EMD units, most of which have been rebuilt to one extent or another. BNSF 2549 is a GP39-3, rebuilt from a GP30. You can still see the GP30 dynamic brake intakes and two of the three radiator fans. Back in the distance on the next track over, you can see what was once an SD45-2, now an SD40-2. The power is sitting at the shop, just off of the main through Denver.
