The catenary around Union Station for RTD Commuter Rail trains looks like something from Chicago or the Northeast. Buildings have also shot up all around Union Station. And of course, "train hall" has been completely rebuilt. The Zephyr is backing in to Track 4, the standard track for the Zephyrs station stop. It is rare to get a shot of the eastbound Zephyr making this move in such great light. In fact, for about half the year, this move takes place in the dark, well after sunset. This is a bit of a bottleneck for the Zephyr (east and west) as these are "yard limits". No CTC and no dispatcher through here. It is somewhat analogous to a parking lot for cars. The standard Rocky Mountaineer power is currently be worked on, so UP has leased the SD70Ms as substitute power. It rather appears that there is a lot of power on the point of the Rocky Mountaineer. In reality, the Mountaineer is back a bit and three light units are coming in to North Yard off the Belt Lead. The third unit from the head end was not needed for the journey east on the plains, so the outbound crew (new crew that got on in Denver for the journey east) had to cut the power off and back down the Belt in to North Yard to drop off the third unit. Today, the Belt and North Yard are, of course, owned by UP. The Rocky Mountaineer, is a rare move, is backing off the Belt Line and in to North Yard so it can depart west toward the Moffat on Main 3. Typically, the train would just cross Bypass 1 or 2 westbound, but both Bypass tracks were blocked, necessitating the rare move. However, with fall rapidly approaching, the train has once again started up twice-weekly service. The Mountaineer power is still in the shop, so a pair of (Phase 2) SD70Ms are being used for power. However, about five years ago, the power plant converted to natural gas. UP's DV72 yard job is on the Belt Lead in the foreground.
