President's Day 2014 ended up being the first time I personally saw one of Norfolk Southern's Heritage Units. Specifically, the Pennsy unit (NS 8102). It came to Denver the day before on a BNSF manifest. It had a quick turnaround and was headed back south in the afternoon on BNSF's HDENAMS (Denver, CO to Amarillo, TX). Unfortunately, as seen here, the heritage unit did not lead. However, one of the few "New Image" or "Swoosh" painted BNSF C44-9Ws was on the point.

Now that is a lot of concrete ties! Each (full) stack looks to have 90 ties. A very quick (and extremely rough) estimate indicates there are probably over 40,000 ties here, ready to be used! At 20" between each tie (about right for EMU commuter rail), these ties could cover 12 miles of single track or 6 miles of double track. Actually not all that much when you think about it.

So much in this shot has changed over the years and so much has stayed the same. The track configuration and rolling stock sitting in the yard hasn't changed much. The type of power and color scheme has changed dramatically! 30 years ago, this was the main yard for the Rio Grande and there was a sea of Black and Aspen Gold here. 20 years ago, Scarlet Gray had moved in. Today, Armour Yellow dominates as North Yard is now just a small, local yard on Union Pacific's vast system.

Just a short distance west of the west switch of Mesa, construction on a new overpass for EMU commuter rail is making progress. Once complete, this bridge will be nearly 5,000 feet long! It is here that the commuter rail will leave the UP right of way and swing north, crossing the track, Airport Blvd, 32nd Avenue and I-70. This 22.8 mile long line from Union Station to Denver International Airport is scheduled to open in 2016.
