A lot of construction is going on behind Union Station these days. New buildings (both residential lofts and hotels) are under construction and the new dome-type enclosure for the eight tracks behind Union Station is clearly visible.

This is a scene that is drastically changed in the last 15 years. 15 years ago, the tracks, the bridges and a field is just about all you would have found! Dozens of buildings have been built in that time and the tracks (both the Joint Line and Light Rail) now run through was is essentially a trench of buildings! Even just five years ago, the building to the left was a parking lot. In this shot, an RTD "E" Line train approaches the Denver Station as a southbound coal load proceeds on Main 2. A northbound empty is stopped on Main 1.

When EMD first introduced the SD9043MAC, I wasn't crazy about the car body. But, I must admit, over the years (and through the models...from SD9043MAC to SD70ACe), the look has grown on me. I am still not crazy about the funky notch-nose, but otherwise, I like the look of the SD70ACe.

It was close to eleven years ago that I took a picture from this same bridge in Lodo. At that point, the tracks here were still mostly in a field, with just a few of the buildings under construction. Here, an SD70ACe leads a coal load south on Main 1 alongside an empty stopped on Main 2. (The 8,100-foot Lodo Siding sits empty to the right).

Here, a northbound coal empties passes underneath Speer Blvd and then over 15th Street in Denver. There is something rather unusual about this coal empty that you may not realize at first. It is being led by a C44-9W, which has DC traction motors instead of AC traction motors.

An RTD Light Rail train departs from the recently-relocated south Denver Station. This train is headed for the "W" Line. The "W" Line was completed a few months ago and largely follows the old BN Federal Branch right of way heading west. It ultimately terminates at the Jefferson County Building near Golden.

General Electric uses this dynamometer test car out on the road when it is testing new/prototype locomotives. Case-in-point is here, as the car is going along with GECX 2022 (new Tier 4 GEVO prototype) enroute to Pueblo, CO

A quick look at GECX 2022 (the new Tier 4 prototype from GE) and the GE dynamometer test car (#100), both of which are on their way to the Transportation Technology Center east of Pueblo.

The Galesburg, IL to Denver, CO mixed freight has just about reached its destination! The train just knocked down the triple signal at 48th Avenue, the entrance in to BNSF's Denver Yard.

The ES44AC (or, as UP designated it, the C45ACCTE) is the latest and greatest offered by General Electric. Granted this particular unit, spotted in North Yard, could stand a bath at this point!

The big yellow patch, just like the one seen here, has now been applied to all but 11 of the 273 AC4400CWs that Espee had on their roster. The scarlet and gray is fading and not looking too well. Unfortunately, Espee is getting very close to being nothing more than a museum railroad.

Oh the wye near Kalamath Street, hostlers are turning around a stretch of six units. A very dirty UP 6668 is the lead unit.

The SD70ACe is, of course, the latest and greatest power offered by EMD. This particular units joined UP's roster in 2008 as part of an order of 50 such units. They are not super common in Denver as there is such a focus on coal in Denver and SD70ACes, at this point, are seldom - if ever - used as coal power.

UP is in the process of renumbering their 309 SD9043MACs. The units have spent their entire lives in the 8000-8308 number range. Now, in order to make room for new power, the units are being moved to a number range that, for several decades, was held by UP's SD40-2 force. It looks quite odd to see this unit with such a lower number after 17 years.

This GP38-2 has certainly seen better days. However, it is a testament to the quality of EMD power that this nearly 35-year-old unit is still on the rails. Sure hope EMD can find some new life under Caterpillar.
