A string of five units sit ready for assignment, basking away in the later afternoon sun. The front-most unit is a Norfolk Southern SD70M-2, which don't make their way to Colorado very often. In the distance, a "Rocktober" banner is still posted on Coors Field, thanks to the Rockies fantastic performance since June.

Not a lot going on around UP's 36th Street Yard on this Sunday afternoon! A pair of GP15-1's (complete with Remote Control) sit nose to nose waiting for switching duties. Local power sits off to the left and two AC4400CWs sit ready for their next assignment on the right.

Whoops! That's gonna leave a mark. The handbrake on this covered hopper failed to get set. The hopper was on the BNSF Golden Branch (that leads to Coors) and ended up rolling east down the line! It was going roughly 45 MPH when it hit the switch at C&S Junction and derailed. What looks like snow in the foreground are actually little plastic (non-toxic) beads, which the hopper was carrying.

Yard Shots Grand Luxe Express
If I had taken this shot one year earlier, you would have seen the Ski Train cars in the shot! These are the tracks at Burnham at which the Ski Train was stored during the off season. Instead, the tracks are now filled with former Grande Luxe Express cars. The cars were purchased by Phil Anschutz and are currently being repaired and upgraded.

Several times each day (as needed), hostlers from North Yard transport units from North Yard to the shops at Burnham. These units may need repairs, or they may simply be due for their 90-day inspection. Here, a set of seven units is on the Burnham Lead. The units just came off of the Joint Line at Walnut Street.

Front Range (BNSF) BNSF
With its journey nearly in the books, BNSF's daily HLAUDEN (Laurel, MT to Denver, CO) freight pulls across Pecos Street. In the next four to eight years, this scene is supposed to be quite different as RTD Light Rail (or Commuter Rail) should be visible at this location.

Okay everybody, why is it important to not race the train to the grade crossing? About two weeks earlier, a tanker truck loaded with Ethanol attempted to beat this SD40-2 to a grade crossing. The result was a huge fireball and a lot of heat! Amazingly, nobody was hurt in the incident. The SD40-2 was doing local switching. It had no cars at the time and was running long hood forward, which is no doubt what saved the crew.

A trio of units sit near BNSF's engine shop in Denver as a (somewhat unusual) morning storm moves in toward Denver from the southwest. An interesting note about UP 5701. That was the number ex-Rio Grande GP60 #3155 was originally slated to get in UP's roster. However, the GP60s were moved into the 1900-number series before the unit could actual pick up the number.

This is a little bit of an odd sight! A UP C44AC-CTE is poking its head out of BNSF's engine shop in Denver. BNSF was borrowing the unit from UP, and at this moment the unit was being used to drag a unit out of the engine facility.

Modern modelers rejoice! You can now take your DRGW Heritage Unit and your Zephyr train set and run them together!! UP 1989 sits on the point of the Zephyr at Union Station. The second P42 was not loading and UP 1989 was added in Salt Lake City to help out. The train would leave Union Station about 20 minutes later, with UP 1989 still on the point for the trip to Chicago.
