A quick look at the new Phase 7 paint scheme applied to Superliners. As has really always been the case with Amtrak's Superliners, little changes except for the stripe on the sides. As you can see here, the red and white thin lines, and thicker blue line (from the Phase 4 scheme) have been replaced with a single thick line that changes color along the length of the body.

Hoses with potable water are connected to each of the Superliners on the morning Zephyr, filling them up with water that will be used for drinking, sink, toilets, etc on the journey west toward Emeryville.

Denver is the longest stop the Zephyr makes between Chicago, IL and Emeryville, CA (whether headed east or west). With Denver being roughly the halfway point, all the Superliners are filled with water (as seen here), the engines are fueled, are other maintenance tasks take place.

Amtrak's Pacific Bend Pacific-series sleeper car sports my personal favorite of Amtrak's seven paint schemes, Phase 3. This is a Budd-built sleeper, originally built and delivered to Union Pacific in 1950. It spend roughly 20 years running on UP's "City" trains before being turned over to Amtrak in 1971.

From the time the Rio Grande Zephyr starting running in 1971 when Amtrak formed until 2010, the Zephyr (whether it be the Rio Grande Zephyr or Amtrak's California Zephyr) typically used Track 1 at Union Station. However, with the building of the new commuter rail infrastructure, commuter rails needed Tracks 1-3 (and Tracks 6-8). Consequently, "heavy rail" is restricted to using Tracks 4 and 5. The Zephyr, as seen here, typically uses Track 4. The Winter Park Express (when in season) typically uses Track 5.

AMTK 171 and AMTK 45 lead the Zephyr as the train makes a reverse move into Track 4 at Denver Union Station for its morning station stop. Denver is the longest stop for the Zephyr between Chicago and Emeryville. The train will hold here for a little over an hour (as it is arriving a bit early today). Each Superliner will have its potable water topped off and the P42s will be refueled, among other maintenance tasks.

The westbound Zephyr is backing into Denver Union Station amongst the numerous catenary lines in place for RTD's various commuter rail trains, including the A-Line to DIA (closest two tracks), the B-Line to Westminster, the G-Line to West Arvada, and the N-Line to Thornton (all on the furthest two tracks). Amtrak's Pacific Bend is on the tail end of the Zephyr this morning.

The California Zephyr is going through the motions of making the stop that requires the most work on the journey. The reverse move into Union Station. The train pulled beyond the signal at Prospect Jct and is now backing over the South Platte river toward the Buck Lead.

One of the few-remaining Pacific-series passenger cars, built by the the Budd Company in 1950 for Union Pacific, the car transferred to Amtrak when Amtrak formed in 1971. After serving in various roles for Amtrak, it is now used by Amtrak for special trains, inspection trips, display trains, and employee support movements. Today, it is catching a ride on the back of the California Zephyr.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Amtrak
The morning Zephyr is coming to a stop in the OS at Prospect Jct. After the conductor throws a switch behind, the train will make a reverse move across the Buck Lead, into Denver Union Station for its scheduled stop. Prospect Jct a spot where BNSF and Union Pacific meet. In fact, the track the lead units are on is BNSF. The diverging track the train is not on to the right is the very start of UP's Moffat Tunnel Sub.

On a mostly overcast May morning, the westbound Zephyr is on the west end of the Brush Sub, nearing its station stop in Denver. It just came by the Suncor refinery in Commerce City and passed underneath the RTD N-Line (commuter rail) overpass.

Front Range (BNSF) RPCX
It's rather incredible to think that there was a time many decades ago when F-units were the start power on freight trains, and would have been common place in locations such as here at the north end of North Yard on the BNSF Front Range Sub! This F7 was delivered to the SP&S in 1953, and is now headed back to Washington to the Inland Northwest Railroad Museum. Hopefully, it'll be restored in its SP&S paint.
