One of the conductors for the Winter Park Express works to open the knuckle of the coupler on what had been the trailing car on the trip west. However, this will soon become the first car for the trip east. The crew is working on running the power around the train.

After arriving in Fraser, the power for the Winter Park Express has cut away from the train and is headed for the west switch so it can run around the train.

Just east of the east switch of Fraser finds EMD's testing special on the roll, slowly, up the grade. All the UP units in this shot are in full dynamics while the two EMD prototypes are in Run 8. The purpose of the testing is to check the units performance at high altitude, to see how much exhaust is produced when fully loaded and pulling, and test their performance at low speeds. The consist here is only making 12 MPH.

Despite being only a week away from June, there is still a considerable amount of snow on the upper portions of the ski slopes at Winter Park (visible in the distance). The westbound Zephyr pulls in to Fraser about 15 minutes late for a quick station stop.

I have a goal to attempt to record all 207 P42DCs that Amtrak has recorded on "film". Well, I should say the goal is to get pictures of all the remaining units. Several have been scrapped after accidents. However, AMTK 7 is one unit that I hadn't seen yet when I took this shot in Fraser. At this point, I've got nearly 60% of them recorded.

To the best of my knowledge, Fraser is the highest station stop on Amtrak's system. As the sign on the platform indicates, Fraser is 8,574 feet above sea level. In this shot, passengers briefly stretch their legs and get a few pictures on the platform. On this day, there were two private cars on the tail end of the Zephyr.

Despite the fact that June is only about a week away, that doesn't stop Colorado from producing some wild weather. About 15 minutes before this shot of Amtrak arriving at Fraser, it was actually snowing pretty hard here at the platform! The Zephyr is pulling in just after 12:30pm, arriving Fraser roughly 2 1/2 hours late.

AMTK 199 leads the westbound Zephyr towards its station stop in Fraser. Amtrak's age (and deferred maintenance) shows on the nose of AMTK 199. The train will hang around at Fraser for about 10 minutes to give passengers time to board or disembark.

The weather really cooperated here at Fraser for the Engineering Special. A major rain storm passed through less than 20 minutes ago, but cleared out and left sunlight in its wake in time for the special. UP's DDA40X was last on the Moffat in April 2008.

UP's Engineering Special, led by DDA40X UP 6936, is coming down the main at Fraser. At 4,830 feet, Fraser is definitely one of the shorter sidings on the Moffat.

During at station stop at Fraser, the Conductor pauses briefly to speak with a passenger who is gathering their luggage in preparation for boarding. Note the clear signal in the distance, indicating DS-82 is ready for us once the stop is complete.

At Fraser, the westbound Zephyr makes about a 10 minute stop. In addition to picking up and dropping off passengers, Fraser is a designated smoking stop. The Zephyr is a nonsmoking train these days, so there are a few stops where passengers may de-train for a few minutes to get their fix. This is the inside of a Superliner I Sightseer Lounge car.

The eastbound California Zephyr sits at the depot at Fraser. Passengers get to stretch their legs briefly. This is a really great spot to shoot eastbound almost any time of day or year!
