You can really see the near-2% grade amplified in this shot as a BNSF grain train pulls on to the slightly less intense 1% grade at Fraser. The forecast today called for thunderstorms all afternoon in the Fraser Valley and the meteorologists were spot on today as the rain is coming down hard!

Some colorful, local flowers adorn the covered portion of the platform at Fraser as a westbound UP coal empty passes by in the midst of a substantial downpour. The empty is headed for the West Elk mine on the North Fork Branch in western Colorado.

The westbound Zephyr glides through the S-Curve just east of the east switch of Fraser with a rather colorful consist. AMTK 184, the Phase IV heritage unit, leads a standard Phase V P42DC and an ALC-42 (AMTK 301) in the 50th Anniversary scheme. AMTK 301 has been dropped off at various crew change points so crews can learn and get used to the new units that will be replacing Amtrak's aging fleet of P42DCs.

With its stop at Fraser nearly complete, passengers on the platform make their way back toward their cars to load up and continue the journey. Next stop to the east will be Denver Union Station!

While stop at the station in Fraser, a few passengers briefly pop off the train to stretch their legs and enjoy the cool (and damp) scenery 8,500 feet above sea level.

The eastbound Zephyr slows to a stop on the main at Fraser for its scheduled station stop. The Zephyr often will hold here for 10-15 minutes to give passengers a chance to stretch their legs. However, running a bit behind schedule, the train will keep its stop to just five minutes this evening.

The Patrón Tequila Express is a vintage 1927 passenger car, originally owned by the Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio railroad. The car is now owned by John Paul DeJoria, the founder of Patrón Spirits Company. Apparently, John Paul DeJoria is friends with actor Dan Akroyd, and it is not uncommon for Akroyd to accompany DeJoria on the car. Although I did not notice Akroyd on the platform or in the car on this day.

Today's westbound Zephyr just happens to have a private car on the tail end. Passenger from The Patrón Tequila Express stand on the platform at Fraser near the car, ready to re-board as soon as they hear the horn from the head end.

I was never a huge fan on Amtrak's Phase IV paint scheme, but that doesn't mean it isn't cool seeing the Phase IV Heritage Unit leading the westbound Zephyr! Here, the train is making its station stop at Fraser on the main track. The engineer just gave a blast on the horn, telling passenger that stepped off to stretch their legs that it is time to get back onboard.

After a fantastic day in the Colorado High Country along the Moffat, it is time for a parting shot of this eastbound coal load that has UP 1988 on the point. The train is starting to slow as the head end is now on the 2% grade. The train would ultimately slow to 5 MPH on its way up to the tunnel, but it did not stall out and ultimately made it over the top of the hill.

It certainly is not ever day that you see the red of "Miss Katy" passing by the Fraser/Winter Park platform! In fact, UP 1988 has managed to elude me for the past 11 years! I hadn't seen it since 2007 prior to this fateful October day.

Coming past the Fraser depot, UP 1988 is rolling east at about 12 MPH. With four units and 78 cars, the train is probably right around 2.0 HPT, which is about the bare minimum to crawl up the 2% grade coming up between Fraser and Winter Park.

After holding at Tabernash for nearly 90 minutes, UP 1988 now gets its turn to attack the grade up to Winter Park. The grade at Fraser decreased from 1.75% to just under 1%, making the climb a little bit easier. All four units (two on the point and two on the rear) are definitely in run 8.

Running just nine minutes late, the eastbound Zephyr departs Fraser, CO, its last station stop west of Denver. The perspective here is from the top of the Fraser tubing hill. In the winter, you can rent a huge inter tube and fly down the hill.
