After holding for about an hour at Tabernash while waiting for the MNYRO to perform some work at Fraser (which can still be seen in the siding), the MRONY is finally on the move eastbound once again. Note that practically every pine tree in the shot is purple! All those trees have died as a result of the "Beetle Bark" epidemic in Colorado.

Anybody need a slightly-used Pontiac!? As the MNYRO pulls into the siding, a very old Pontiac (feel free to comment on the year as I have no clue) sits on its bare axles in the dandelions.

The MNYRO comes to a stop at the east switch of Fraser. Here, the crew will make a cut and tie down the back portion of the train. Then, two gondolas will be set out on the house track. The hill on the right side of the shot is used for intertubing in the winter. You can also see the ski run at Winter Park in the distance, and even a ski lift atop the mountain in the upper right hand corner.

Amazing to think that trains once ran over that mountain range in the distance! On this fabulous June day, UP's MNYRO pops out of the trees and into the clearing in Fraser Valley.

This Ski Train, in its 69th Season, sits idling on the siding at Fraser. I sincerely hope that the train will run for another 69 seasons! The train holds on the siding at Fraser for four to five hours during the day while waiting to pick up skiers back at Winter Park between 3:30pm and 4:00pm.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Amtrak
As Amtrak's F40PH's started to age in the early 1990's, Amtrak starting looking for a new alternative to replace them. GE and EMD competed for the business and GE ultimately won with the P42DC. However, Amtrak did take a handful of F59PH's (EMDs answer to the F40PH). Since they all run in California, they are hard to find elsewhere. I was happy to capture it on this day!

About a half hour before the Ski Train is ready to leave Fraser, a westbound BNSF manifest headed for Provo, UT passes the platform. The Ski Train passed this exact same train a few hour earlier down at C&S Junction!

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
Once the Ski Train has been wyed at Tabernash, it returns to the siding of Fraser. There, the train waits until it is time to return to Winter Park to pick up its passengers for the trip home. Fortunately, Fraser is less than 5,000 feet in length, making it a seldom-used siding by UP dispatchers (as most trains exceed then length of the siding).

A very late-running Amtrak 5 crosses over Elk Creek Road a few hundred feet east of the east switch of Fraser. It is amazing to think that four months ago, the ground was completely covered by snow right here!

Amtrak, now running over two hours late after getting stuck behind a stalled out train at Clay, approaches the east switch of Fraser. I thought the pile of wood in the foreground made for a very photogenic shot along with the mountains in the background.
