As the westbound Zephyr crosses the grade crossing at East Portal, a bit of snow is kicked up! Cars crossing the tracks combined with blowing snow has resulted in a bit of a build up on the crossing.

Welcome to the highest point on any mainline still active in the United States! We are just over 9,100 feet above sea level at the east switch of East Portal, just over a mile away from the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel. Technically, the train does still have a little elevation to gain, as it will top out at 9,236 feet above sea level. Today's Zephyr, running a little tardy, glides through blowing snow and a chilly 5°F.

Even though UP is likely the single biggest customer of EMD engines, it is still more common to catch a GE leading a coal train on the Moffat. So, when an SD70ACe does happen to find itself on the point, it's always nice to get a few shots. Such is the case here as an SD70ACe heads toward the bridge that crosses over South Boulder Creek.

A westbound coal empty, led by a SD70ACe and four GEs, kicks up a bit of exhaust as it charges up the main at Cliff. Note the huge piles of old wooden ties toward the right side of the frame. Also not the code line on the right side of the image. This is used for PTC. This code line will not be found everywhere...only in places where reception is less than great.

This shot was more than a bit of a stretch! It is nearly 35 minutes past sunset and the ISO on the camera is cranked up to the max! But, how often does the opportunity arise in which you can shoot the eastbound Winter Park Express (Ski Train) meeting the eight hour late westbound Zephyr at Tolland!?

It is 33 minutes after sunset and the light is all but gone as the eastbound Ski Train quickly moves on the main at Tolland, approaching the grade crossing.

The eastbound Ski Train just peaks around the curve near the west end of Tolland. The train had to wait in the siding at Winter Park for the eastbound Zephyr to pass by. Consequently, the train is now running about 30 minutes behind schedule.

Now that is a lot of Superliners all at Tolland at the same time! Passengers that left Denver almost seven hours late on #5 wait in the siding for #6 that speeds by on the main. Unfortunately, #5 will have to wait longer still for the Ski Train to show up.

The Continental Divide is shrouded in clouds as the eastbound Zephyr (running right on time) meets the westbound Zephyr (running close to eight hours late) at Tolland.

When they are both running on time, the daily Zephyrs typically meet somewhere around Dotsero or Range. The westbound Zephyr is very much not running on time today, now over seven hours late as it sits in the siding at Tolland, meeting its counterpart. The opportunity for a meet between the Zephyr on the east slope of the divide is a rare one indeed!

The high winds speeds already are kicking up quite a bit of snow, but the swiftly moving eastbound Zephyr is definitely making its own contribution to the swirling white stuff as it crosses the grade crossing at Tolland.

Hope you have your parka! While the temperature is 30°F, it feels closer to 15°F as there are wind gusts of 40+ MPH here in the valley at Tolland. Plenty of blowing snow is kicked up as the westbound Zephyr slows to a stop in the siding.

AMTK 145 is the second unit out on the westbound Zephyr on this day...the light is rapidly fading as the sun is behind clouds to the west.

A very late Zephyr rolls west in the siding at Tolland. The train will have to wait here for close to an hour for the eastbound Zephyr and the Ski Train.
