The lead unit on a westbound coal empty approaches the east portal of Tunnel 20. While Tunnel 20 is by no means the shortest tunnel in the Tunnel District, at 460 feet, it is not even close to the longest either.

Two units on the back of this westbound coal empty see some daylight as the train moves through the Tunnel District between Tunnel 19 and Tunnel 20. The train would eventually stop at Winter Park and wait for a few hours for a rock slide in Byers Canyon to get cleaned up.

Running right on time on its way back to Denver, the eastbound Ski Train rounds the curve at the west end of Crescent. A lot of the snow from the blizzards earlier in the year has melted away.

A scene that has been repeated many times in the past and will hopefully be repeated many times again in years to come. The ex-DRGW business cars (California, Utah and Kansas) - now owned by the Ski Train - cross the bridge at MP 36.5.

The Ski Train, led by UP 1989 makes its way out of the shortest tunnel in the Tunnel District (Tunnel 29) and crosses the bridge at MP 36.5. The tracks cross South Boulder Creek at this location for most of the remainder of the trip west to the Moffat Tunnel.

The MNYRO-30 developed an interesting problem at Cliff. Actually, developed may not be the correct word. When meeting an eastbound coal load, the conductor on the coal train noticed a hazmat violation on the MNYRO. A tank car of Methane was placed next to a gondola full of pipe, where the pipe exceeded the height of the gondola! After several hours of delay, the train switched cars around (using the Cliff siding) and solved the problem. Here, the head end of the train is west of Cliff, performing some switching moves.

Amazing the things you sometimes find when you least expect too! It has been about four years since UP replaced the old Rio Grande signals (and control boxes) at Crescent with all-new equipment. Today, while scouting up around Pactolus (between Cliff and Rollins), I noticed the signal control shed for Crescent sitting about fifty feet away from the tracks amongst some trees!

Three mid-train helpers pass the lake at Pactolus on a unit CNW coal load bound for the KP line and points east. My dad told me that he and his family came up to Pactolus when he was a kid to go ice skating in the winter, although he doesn't specifically remember any trains!

On the approach to Cliff, the MNYRO is about to enter tunnel 29. The train is power by three SD70M's, a C44-9W, and an SD60 on this morning. At Cliff, the train would meet its counterpart, the MRONY.
