UP 1988 looks pretty sharp as it leads a coal train east through Byers Canyon. The Colorado River is somewhat low, typical for the fall. The train has clear signals all the way to Tabernash.

The red of UP 1988 offers a very colorful contrast against the falls colors of the Colorado High Country. This 78-car coal load will be entering Byers Canyon shortly on its journey east.

UP 1988 works its way through the narrow canyon known as "Little Gore Canyon". The canyon starts at Tunnel 39 to the east (which the train is approaching) and ends just past Tunnel 40 to the west.

UP 1988 and train are just east of the siding of Radium, approaching the relatively short canyon known as "Little Gore Canyon". From the photographer's perspective, there is a gap west of the canyon allowing for this view on the train.

This was, by far, my favorite shot of the day on this particular outing. This is a shot I have wanted to get for years, but every time I make it up to this spot, either the weather or the trains are not cooperating. Today, however, the skies are crystal clear as the Westbound Zephyr approaches the east portal of Tunnel 39 and the start of Little Gore Canyon along the Colorado River.

The Westbound Zephyr has just passed the hotbox detector and MP 113.2 and is now about to duck in to Tunnel 39. This particular perspective requires a little bit of hiking down to an overlook from Trough Road. Not a bad hike at all...less than five minutes. And well worth it, I might add!

While Gore Canyon is all but inaccessible (other than by rail), the rails become visible at the west end of Gore Canyon from County 1 Road (Trough Road) on the south side of the Colorado River. There are multiple places where you can stop and get some nice shots of the tracks, such as this one west of Azure.

Not far west of Azure, the Zephyr makes its way west on the single track mainline of the Moffat. In the background is the west switch of the siding of Azure. The siding is not used super often as it is under 5,000 feet in length.

Looking through the lens of a 400mm lens, we see the Westbound Zephyr as it departs the west end of Azure (note the signal to the right). This stretch of track is between Gore Canyon and Little Gore Canyon. The tracks curve back and forth as they follow the Colorado River.

As soon as they emerge from Byers Canyon, westbound trains can immediately start accelerating. Freight trains can speed up to 60 MPH, while passenger trains such as the Zephyr are able to move up to 70 MPH. This stretch of track between Byers Canyon and Kremmling is the fastest the Zephyr goes between Denver and Glenwood Springs.
