The Canyon Spirit rolls by the new Canyon Pines neighborhood, annexed by the City of Arvada about a decade ago. While roads are all complete for the neighborhood, no construction on any houses has actually started yet. The Canyon Spirit is coming up to the west portal of Tunnel 1. Eventually, a few houses will be located atop of Tunnel 1 (though north of the actual rails).

Just east of Plain, the eastbound Canyon Spirit is on the move and approaching Tunnel 1. Way off in the distance, you can see the Valmont Power Station. The power plant shut down its last coal generator in 2017. It now has solar arrays onsite, and a natural gas generator that can provide 70 MW during peak demands. Although you cannot see it, the BNSF Front Range Sub runs right by the reservoir.

Some snow is coming down here at Plain as a westbound coal empty passes by a few pieces of maintenance equipment in the house track. The elevation here at Plain is right around 6,800 feet (around 2,075 meters) above sea level. 1,000 feet of elevation makes a pretty big different in snowfall here.

Amtrak's Phase 4 paint scheme is my personal least favorite of all of Amtrak's schemes. Ironically enough, the Phase 4 heritage unit, seen here on the main at Plain, is the heritage unit that has probably spent the most time on the Zephyr since the heritage units were introduced 15 years ago in 2011.

The westbound Zephyr has a very colorful consist this morning, with a BNSF ES44C4 on the point, and AMTK 164, the Phase 4 heritage unit, second out. The BNSF unit was added to the train in Lincoln, NE overnight due to a mechanical issue with one of the P42s. I am not sure which one or what the issue was. The train is on the main at Plain, passing by the house track on the approach to Rainbow Cut.

An eastbound BNSF oil train rolls through Rainbow Cut on the main at Plain. It is actually slowing and it will come to a stop as soon as the end of the train clears the west switch. It'll wait here for the westbound Zephyr.

At the west switch of Crescent, the westbound Zephyr rolls through the OS on a green signal. In the distance, construction continues on increasing the height of the dam at Gross Reservoir. The height of the dam was originally 340 feet. It has been increased roughly 60 feet so far, with another 71 feet to go. The dam will be 471 feet tall once complete, tripling the capacity of the reservoir.

An eastbound BNSF loaded oil train passes in and out of Tunnel 7, traversing along the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies. The crew on the train is running short on time, so the dispatcher is keeping them rolling east on green signals.

UP 7816 leads a coal empty out of the west portal of Tunnel. Just around the curve behind the camera and to the right is Tunnel 4. Through the tunnel district, it can feel like you spend as much time in tunnels as out of them!

It was this time of year roughly 12 years ago that a "500 year storm" hit Colorado when it rained for four days straight. In that storm, the fill between Tunnel 2 and Tunnel 3 completely washed out, shutting down the Moffat for roughly two weeks. Fast-forward to this day as a westbound coal empty crosses the fill, through the cut, and toward Tunnel 3. In the distance to the left, you can see the back half of the train, still coming through Plain.
