A pair of P42DCs lead the westbound Zephyr through CP DS025 at the west end of Plain. Here, the train will really enter in to the lower end of the Tunnel District, and will pass through 16 tunnels over the course of the next five miles or so.

A pair of SD40-2s are working on the west local today. The first time I have ever seen six axle power working on the west local. Six axle power is not permitted on the wye on the branch, so if the local returns with cars, they will have to run around them at Rocky.

At the absolute end of the Rocky Spur, on the other side of the Acrosa aggregate plant loadout. This G8 was built in the late 1950s by General Motors Diesel, the Canadian plant for EMD. The unit went to Canadian National and spent a lot of time around the CN system. It was eventually bought by Texas Industries Inc (TXI), and moved here, to the aggregate plant along CO-93. The unit became redundant when the aggregate plant purchase a track-mobile to switch cars. The unit has sat quiet in this same spot for the last 17 years, not being used since 2007. Fortunately, it has been donated to the Pueblo Railway museum. It will eventually be moved and restored.

Two things I have never seen before, prior to today. First is the West Local running on a Sunday. But even more interesting is the power. A pair of SD40-2s are working the local. I've never seen six axle power run on the Rocky Flats Industrial lead. The local just arrived at the aggregate plant at the north end, but the plants car mover is in the way of the inbound track. The crew is working on a solution to move the track mover.

The Rocky Mountaineer's "Rockies to the Red Rocks" is generally considered to be a summer/fall train. However, on April 19th, an eastbound test of the Mountaineer heads east through a winter wonderland at Crescent.

AMTK 138 and AMTK 82 lead the westbound Zephyr around the curve on the main near the west end of Crescent. The Phase 7 paint on the units really pop against the white wintery scene in the third week of April.

These mornings are some of my favorite around the front range of the Rockies. Not enough snow to make traveling difficult, but enough to give a fantastic coating on the ground and in the trees. The Zephyr rolls west on the main at Crescent, horn blowing for the approaching grade crossing.

Just west of Tunnel 18, the morning Zephyr wraps through a black and white winter wonderland. In reality, I took a bit of artistic license here and removed all the color from the photos, save for the two Phase 7 P42DCs on the point of the westbound train.

With temperatures right around 60°F (15°C) and crystal clear blue skies, it is a wonderful day along the Front Range. A P42DC and a P40DC (which has since been rebuilt as a P42DC) lead the westbound Zephyr in the middle of the Tunnel District. The train is approaching the east portal of Tunnel 7.

I really love seeing an Amtrak heritage unit leading on any Amtrak train. A wonderful "flash from the past". AMTK 161, the Phase 1 Heritage P42DC reminds me of the very early days of Amtrak when SDP40s wearing the Pointless Arrow scheme ruled on long distance trains.

The westbound Zephyr is just about to poke its nose out of Tunnel 3. Savvy Amtrak fans might note that the "Amtrak" on the nose is not the normal one on Phase 5 units. This is indeed AMTK 161, the Phase 1 Heritage unit sporting the bloody nose and classic Amtrak font.

As the westbound Zephyr emerges from Tunnel 2 in the Lower Tunnel District, we see the west portal of Tunnel 3 in the foreground, from which the Zephyr will also emerge from in less than a minute.
