UP 8205 and train have a clear (green) signal on the main at the south switch of La Salle. You may note that there is a derail set on the siding here. That is due to a local that is currently in the siding and switching out cars at the yard in La Salle.

A southbound local led by an SD70M is being overtaken by a southbound manifest led by an C44AC-CTE at La Salle. The side-by-side of the EMD and GE units makes for a pretty good comparison.

UP has a small yard in La Salle, CO. Several locals originate and terminate here in La Salle, UP 4528 being one such local. The train is stopped on the siding as a southbound manifest approaches alongside the train from the north.

In between La Salle and Greeley, a southbound military train crosses over the South Platte river parallel to US-85. Back in June, when runoff and early summer rain was at record levels, the South Platte completely covered all the sand you see in this shot. Now, getting in to fall, and the river has receded. But it is still higher than it normally would be this time of year.

On a beautiful, crystal clear October morning, UP 9006 leads a manifest north across the South Platte river between La Salle and Greeley on the Greeley Sub. The rail bridge parallels US-85, whose supports are just visible in the background.

This northbound manifest has come to stop on the main at La Salle. I did not hear any conversations on the scanner, so I am not sure sure the stop was made. It only last about 10 minutes.

A trio of SD70Ms leads a manifest that has been built in the new yard at La Salle on the Monfort Industrial Lead. UP built this new extension of the yard at La Salle (to the northeast of the existing yard) in 2019. This particular train is waiting for a crew to take it south.

In the roughly 25 years of taking train pictures, I have managed to shoot 150 (as of the date of this photo) of the over 1,400 SD70Ms that UP has on the roster. SD70Ms actually are not all that common in Colorado, with AC traction motor units being fall more common. Anyway, a Phase II SD70M, UP 3836, sits along in the north end of the yard in La Salle.

Throughout much of the year, the South Platte River seems to be down at almost a trickle. However, after a winter with a lot of snow fall and a ton of rain this spring, the South Platte have flowed a bit over its banks! A southbound UP manifest has a Kansas City Southern "Retro-Belle" SD70ACe on the point as the train crosses the river. Although this is a manifest in UP's system, there are several dozen double stacks at the front of the train.

Roster shot of SD70ACe-T4, UP 3087. I try to get a few shots of these units whenever I see them as they are relatively rare. Out of UP's roster of over 8,000 locomotives, they only have 87 of these EMD Tier 4 units.

This scene has something of an other worldly feel to it as a rerouted California Zephyr comes to a stop at the south end of La Salle in the siding. What you see in the sky obscuring a very red sun are not clouds, but rather smoke from one of three major wildfires currently burning in Colorado. This fire is the Cameron Peak fire which, as of this photos, has burned nearly 6,000 acres.

If you are familiar with the California Zephyr and Colorado, that still may not help you in trying to determine the location of this shot! The Zephyr is just north of La Salle on UP's Greeley Sub. The train is detouring through Wyoming due to the closure of UP's Glenwood Springs Sub.

It has been a stormy afternoon and the Cheyenne Frontier Days steam train depart La Salle south under mostly cloudy skies, a bit a smoke from the stack drifting off. The train is accelerating up toward a track speed of 60 MPH.

UP 844 is entering a stretch of track where the top speed is 60 MPH, so the throttle is opened up, unleashing a bunch of smoke from the stack.

I don't always make it out to shoot the Cheyenne Frontier Days train. Ever wondered why? This shot might help to answer that question somewhat! As you can see, traffic builds up on US-85, parallel to the tracks. Some people enjoy pacing the steam engine (in both lanes), making it virtually impossible for those in back to get ahead to the next shot. Due to this frustration, I will either sit the day out, or plan out one or two spots I know I'll be able to get to!
