Even though I never personally had a chance to experience it, I always thought Western Pacific was a cool railroad. I liked their paint schemes and wish they could have lasted a bit longer. So it was particularly great to see the WP Heritage Unit leading the MRONY over the Moffat. Here, the train waits on the siding at Cliff for a westbound.

Just over a week ago, UP 1982 led a westbound rock train over the Moffat. Another surprise came to the Moffat on this day when UP 1983 (the Western Pacific heritage unit) led the MRONY! Here, the train is stopped in the hole at Cliff, waiting on a westbound coal empty.

The westbound Zephyr is doing its best to make up for lost time as it hustles past the west switch of Cliff. Due to extreme weather conditions throughout the midwest, the Zephyr is running 4 1/2 hours late today.

West Cliff is one of three locations on the Moffat (east of the tunnel) where UP has not yet replaced the signals. You can see the classic target signal standing along the main on the right side of this shot. Meanwhile, a colorful Denver-Provo manifest sits in the siding to allow the westbound Zephyr to pass.

20 years ago, who would have guessed that one day the most common paint schemes passing through Cliff would be UP and BNSF!? 20 years ago, nobody had heard of BNSF and UP was hardly a mountain railroad. But today, a westbound BNSF manifest meets with an eastbound UP coal load at Cliff.

Railroads will frequently borrow power from one another for any number of reasons. Such was the case on this Sunday morning when a UP SD70M was adding 4,000 horses to BNSF's Denver-Provo trackage rights train.

A westbound BNSF manifest is pulling in to the siding at Cliff. It is meeting an eastbound coal load (which is already waiting for it west of the grade crossing). Unfortunately, it isn't going anywhere for awhile once it gets to the west switch at Cliff due to additional eastbound traffic.

Approaching the grade crossing at Cliff, this coal load is slowing to a stop. It is waiting on a westbound BNSF Denver-Provo train which is already out of Crescent. DS-82 had the coal train hold the main because the BNSF train will be stuck at cliff for awhile due to eastbound traffic. And there are westbounds at Rollins and Tolland all waiting to continue west.

There was a time when this view was completely unobstructed of trees. Made for a great shot of westbounds below Tunnel 29. Fortunately, there is still enough of a gap to get a shot of the power on the curve.

Snow is on the ground as the Zephyr wraps around the curve east of Tunnel 29. Here you can see examples of the Phase I scheme, Phase II scheme and Phase IVb schemes.

To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Amtrak, four P42DC's were painted in heritage schemes. Each scheme was inspired by a scheme previously used by Amtrak. The first of the four units to visit Colorado on the Zephyr was AMTK 156, wearing a Phase I inspired scheme with a Bloody Nose at a Pointless Arrow. I missed its trip west, but caught it coming back east. Here it is at the west switch of Cliff, looking dang good in my opinion.

This coal train will be heading east on the Limon Sub after it reaches Denver. The three mid-train swing helpers will but cut out at North Yard, but this fine looking C44AC-CTE will stay with the train. Here, it is crossing over the bridge at MP 36.45 just west of Tunnel 29.

This was the proverbial "Money Shot" that I was going for on this particular day! This eastbound coal load is leaving Cliff and crossing over South Boulder Creek on the bridge at MP 36.45. Just ahead, the train will enter Tunnel 29.

A whole lot of power leads up the MNYGJ, although only five of the eight units are online. The train is only going 12 MPH and is rounding the curve just south of Tunnel 29.
