To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Amtrak, four P42DC's were painted in heritage schemes. Each scheme was inspired by a scheme previously used by Amtrak. The first of the four units to visit Colorado on the Zephyr was AMTK 156, wearing a Phase I inspired scheme with a Bloody Nose at a Pointless Arrow. I missed its trip west, but caught it coming back east. Here it is at the west switch of Cliff, looking dang good in my opinion.

The "Bloody Nose" Phase I Amtrak Heritage Unit leads the eastbound Zephyr down a snowy main track at Plain. Don't think that simply because it is May that the snow is over in Colorado!

After taking this picture, I started thinking about something. This might be the first time an Amtrak engine in the Phase I scheme (with the Bloody nose) has ever run over the Moffat. Amtrak ran through Wyoming until the Rio Grande Zephyr ended in 1983, which was long after the Phase I scheme had been discontinued. Here, the Pointless Arrow crossed the road at Blue Mountain.

The eastbound Zephyr comes through Big Ten Curve and starts to descend toward Rocky where it will pass a manifest that it has been following since Cliff. Amtrak's Phase I Heritage Unit leads the Zephyr east.

One last look at the Pointless Arrow on the Zephyr's eastward trip toward Denver. Personally, I would prefer any of the Heritage schemes to the current Phase V scheme...What do you think?
